    Reece McAlear to Norwich

If media reports are correct we are about to lose 17 year old Reece McAlear to Norwich City. Reports suggest that both clubs have agreed a deal. Another of Scotland’s young players about to head down south

A fee in the region of £250,000 has been agreed between both clubs. Add ons and sell on clause are thought to have also been agreed

Why can't we keep a hold of our young players and get a of benefit from them in the first team. Really annoys me when we are punting all these players. £250.000. Not that much if the player progresses with first team games and experience.

Its not for the want of trying, but you can't force players to sign on the dotted line and we can't afford to pay 17 year olds megabucks. Thats the system, which favours the big clubs, I'm afraid.

Indeed, if you think it's hard getting adults to sign for us the youth market is so completely rigged in favour of the big clubs we simply can't compete. On the other hand, it encourages Norwich, and the even bigger fish, to invest early in the talent nurtured by others. I hope the lad makes it, for us as much as him, but we could spend all day listing names of 16/17-year-old 'prodigies' at Fir Park and elsewhere who were average by 19 and heading out the game by 21. Accordingly a quarter of a million, plus future cash if he actually makes it, isn't insignificant for a guy not even in our first team yet.
