    unproved "Potential"

A lot of what I read at the moment is that we are signing unproved players. How many players have actually realized that potential when given the chance for us lately? Whether from the academy or from elsewhere we are taking players nobody wants but somehow we seem to think that when they come here Abracadabra! It just doesn't work that way for us. We would be better off paying good money for Proven players so that you know what you are getting.
Just down the road they have spent £100,000,000 on players for their return to the prem. Unproven players? No chance. Its called Ambition.

It’s also called living within your means. We simply don’t have the money to spend £100M even spread over several years, never have, never will.

The reality, as Peace kept on reminding us at every opportunity, is that we are the size of a mid table Championship side. As many Clubs have found out, once the gravy train money goes from the PL then the club needs to get back to the real world and that is where we are now.

But THAT club was worse off than us financially a very short time ago. What happened? When we were in the Premier we never invested in players like that. There is something intrinsically wrong with our policies.

Our best players ever have cost nothing or next to it. The so called names we have signed never impressed that much. Players like Gera and Odemwingie were unknown over here.
We always produced good kids, Hartford, Hope, Bomber, Bennett, Ally Rob, Staham, Barlow, Robson, to name just a few.

Perhaps we still do, but the thing i hate now is they are being pinched by the big clubs after we have brought them on for the last 10 years.
Big clubs sign names, but also go for unproven potential, feckin ours. The game today is an abomination.

Couldn’t agree more 1955. Money has just ruined the game on so many levels since the PL was introduced. I just wish Sky would drop it and then all clubs would be on a much leveller playing field with small town clubs such as ours being able to compete.

Either that our create a rich mans European league for tv and let them all play in that and leave the ‘football clubs’ as against ‘football brands’ to go back to just being that, a football club representing the local town/area rather than a brand.

Would love to see more and more rich owners getting their fingers burnt big time so that would discourage others to join the gravy train.

In a nutshell. Any decent academy players and to be fair very few in recent years we are just preparing for the big money clubs. It has ruined everything. The only way we can get close is to forget the academy and take on loan some players we could have never kept. If you catch my drift.

John Hartson, Anelka, Sturrage etc big name players all they did was to steal a wage and wreck the dressing room.
Wolves signed Roger Johnson for £4.5m we got McCauley on a free.

That's true Soulman, you still have to be careful but there are proven hard working players out there who have turned it on for a few seasons now. We just don't pay out for them.

I be pretty pissed off if we'd payed £25m for Tyrone Mings.
