    Vorsprung Durch Technik

The legend that is German efficiency, planning and engineering.

I heard the Radio Prog 'In Business' entitled 'The Fiasco of the New Berlin Airport' all about the building of the new Berlin Airport to meet the needs of a unified Germany. Here are just some of the problems they have encountered I promise you there are many many others.

1991. Planning for the new airport begins,
2006 Construction begins due to open 2011. Estimated cost 2.83 billion euros
    2010 Opening delayed until 2012
2012 Opening again delayed just 26 days before it was due to open. Cost now 4.3 billion
    2013 Opening delayed until 2014
2014 Opening now put back to 2017. Corruption alledged.
2015 Work halted as roof in imminent danger of collapse
2016 Fire proction system installed by Seimans and Bosch fails inspection. Dept Head admits taking 150,000 in bribes. Cost now 6.9 billion
2017 When tested 80% of electric doors don't open. Opening will now be 2018,2019,2020 or 2022
2018 THIS IS MY FAVOURITE. 750 DISPLAY SCREENS THAT HAVE BEEN LEFT ON BUT NOT USED FOR 6 YEARS HAVE TO BE REPLACED AS THEY ARE AT THE END OF THEIR LIFE
2019 Sand lime bricks that have been used in foundations found to be unsuitable. This had been known since 2012 but ignored. 700 kms of cabling had to be replaced as phone wires and high voltage wires were too close to each other. Plastic anchors used not correct had to be replaced. Cooling pipes not insulated. It was discovered the engineer responsible for fire protection was NOT qualified. In total 550,000 faults were found. Terminal 2 is ready but with drastically reduced spec to the original.
    Cost now 9.4 billion euros.
It is now thought with the demise of Air Berlin the airport is possibly not needed and possibly only 'national pride' will see it completed.

Before you laugh too much some of this cash came out of your pocket via EU funding.

Media driven myth about some of German products. Their window and doors are good though.

Couldn't have anything to do with the difference being State money v Private Enterprise could it? We'll find out if Corbyn comes in and nationlalises everything.

Having said that I don't ever recall seeing quite such a catalogue of disastrous errors.

Classic case of politicians running a sh !t show where the left hand doesn't know what the right hand's doing. Grandiose plans put in place with little thought for the practicalities of every day use, then constantly changed with changes often poorly communicated. Little joined up thinking. Hilariously some of the escalators connecting the train station to the airport ended up being built too short as well.

Possible parallels to be drawn with the absolute clusterfk of the Brexit negotiations. Politicians of all nationalities and persuasions have generally proved to be inept, one eyed, churlish and largely unfit for the purpose of organising a piss up in a brewery never mind our collective socioeconomic futures.

Useless, gutless w@ nkers caught in the headlights of political change and fluctuations reduced to the panic of scared rabbits because of their own inflexibility and failures to adapt. Intransigence and denial on an industrial scale of ineptitude.

Reminds of the French railways spending15 billion euros on trains that were too wide to pass thro stations.
