Is the Whitesands one located in the Royal Bank building? I heard it is now turned into a restaurant.
On the reverse side of businesses/shops closing down, I was thinking of long established businesses that are still going from when I was a youth.(circa 1960's) A few that spring to mind are Baccis newsagents on Whitesands, the fishing tackle shop at the bottom of the Vennel (restricted opening now though), Mogerleys butchers, and the tobacconists at the bottom of Bank Street and there must be a few more in and around the Town Centre. Obviously there are a few pubs still on the go from back then but maybe not run by the same families. I doubt if many of the High Street businesses are under the same ownership as back then either.

Is the fishing tackle shop the one that used to be called The Radio Doctor?

The former Royal Bank building is now a bar call The Bank which serves tapas upstairs. A lot of money has been spent on it and it’s worth a visit.

How long has Burtons on the High Street been there ? Must of been at the same location for years.

The Radio Doctor is now the Spice of India cafe on the other side of the road from the fishing shop.

Burtons was built in 1934 and Baccis in Whitesands and Don Irvine's in Bank Street are both up for lease / sale I believe.
