If you had to choose a trade

    What would it be .

Mine would be a joiner works of art I think.

But plumber's and heating engineers make the most money .
So I'd have to sit with what I do I guess .well 1 or 2 days a month is enough for me.

    Tirade?

Jimmy Reid's UCS rant at capitalism at the yard gates "There will be no hooliganism, there will be no vandalism, there will be no bevvying because the world is watching us, and it is our responsibility to conduct ourselves with responsibility, and with dignity, and with maturity”

Being a glesses mannie will have to do.

Didn’t fancy any trade as such when I turned 16 and don’t fancy it now.

Of course, for my bank account then a heating engineer 😉

OK back in the day when the industry believed in Proper Mannies' standards, training, development and experience.

Now it's all done on the cheap with any willing stringer given work that a trained, experienced journo would have been given. Technology is a curse as well as a blessing too. Cutting out sub-editors and caseroom work means that howlers are found in almost every print medium as there are few, if any, checks when gypes like Panda press the button and send their clichéd, dull prose straight to publication.

    Why?

If you ended up working for a Scottish newspaper, all you would be doing is regurgitating PR pish and eating succulent lamb at Sevco.

    And the pay is terrible.

    Don’t ignore Vintage.

    Vintage KNOWS.

    The profession’s fuucked.

Standards are dreadful because costs have been cut to - and into -the bone giving half-illiterate cliché-mongering pricks like Panda their opportunity, without the protection of the NUJ. Thatcher’s me-me-me individualistic spawn.

    I do agree .
Who I do feel sorry for are young journalists leaving uni with very little chance of getting into the game they trained for.
Didn't the P&J/Evening Express employees not go on strike about 30 years ago and the bully editor sacked them all and replaced them with people without journalistic degrees .

My memory is a bit vague on this so could be misinforming.
