Exactly, as a leader you have to pick your Lieutenants, Ardley has plumped for Doyle, personally I’d have gone with Turner.

This is all very harsh on Doyle. While he shouldn't be an automatic selection, he offers much more than previous posts suggest. He gets stuck in, takes responsibility and always looks to be available for a pass. The downside is that his creative input has been minimal, and that's what gets attention. Some people are far more impressed by the likes of Stanley Aborah simply because he did the odd fancy turn, but then went missing when the opposition had the ball. I'm not an Ardley fan, but would support him on this one.

I wouldn't be as harsh on Doyle as the opening poster, but I did find it odd that Neal Ardley brought him straight back into the team after a good result without him at Harrogate. I wouldn't go so far as to say the manager was "scared" of keeping him out, but I thought his immediate reinstatement in the team was difficult to justify based on previous performances, not to mention his irresponsibility in getting sent off on the opening day.

If we're talking about experience and leadership in the side, I think Jim O'Brien offers substantially more. Jim is willing to take risks and play ambitious passes to get things moving, and even when it doesn't work he shows the courage to try again. Doyle, I feel, plays mostly safe passes that may make his OPTA stats look good, but do very little to aid the creativity of the team or find our key attacking players in space. I'm also bound to say that if he's of that much value as a defensive screen, why have we been shipping so many goals? He is the designated defensive midfielder after all.

Perhaps time to bump this thread back up!

Doyle's performance was decent today until the sending off, but it was still a ridiculous dismissal. I think if he walks straight back into the side after suspension for a second time this season, it won't send the right message. Jim O'Brien can also do the "old head" job and Regan Booty deserves a chance. It won't do any harm to remind Doyle that nobody is an automatic selection.

Agreed on all points, especially the last

If the stock held in Regan Booty is to believed the "Doyle issue" will solve itself in the next 3 games.

Presumably Neal Ardley valued his stock when he signed him. It was utterly pointless to sign him and not play him. I can understand him not playing the trialists who he felt obliged to sign when we were desperate (they are all gradually disappearing from view) but not players he scouted and signed. Booty is a dead ball specialist and we really need one of those in the team, although Billy Big *******s likes to take charge of those as well.

At this point in time he shouldn’t walk back into the team, but what if we lose our next three games and the midfield looks weak?

He's not been that bad this season, other than his two red cards obviously but I think as far as expectations go Rose has been a bigger dissapointment for me so far this season. He was brilliant last season and has so far looked half the player he was last year, I'm guessing it has to do with the shape he came back in after a pre season where I'm not sure he ever left the gym, he seems to have been on the Lukaku workout programme.

    Anyway, I'd sooner see this

    Booty O'Brien Rose Enzio

Booty isn't strong/reliable enough defensively imo to play in the middle (as a 2). Shields seems pretty highly rated though so I wouldn't mind seeing him at some point on the wing. I don't really want to see us leaving out 2 of Thomas, Dennis and Wooton but a 4-3-3 with Shields Wooton and Enzio might be pretty effective, then you'd have a trio of O'Brien, Rose and probably booty in the middle

Suspended for FOUR games. If He's sent off again (and there's every chance) then it's a SIX game ban
