    have a soft spot for Rangers

    back in the 60's in newcastle it was common to claim rangers or celtic as your 2nd team - and yep which one was based on religion

    at least it was amongst everyone that I knew.

    It's apperently not true.

    It was North-East ship yard workers that started the football culture there but no actual link to Sunderland. They changed to red and white stripes in 1901 which apperently is further evidence that it's nout to do with Sunderland.

    But if someone has a link to where it says they founded them, i'd be fascinated to read it.
