44 years since United played Arbroath in League match - back in 1975 .......

It is 44 years ago since United played Arbroath in the old Scottish First Division - which was the last time these two teams played each another in a league match - 44 years ago !!!!!

United had the likes of Andy Gray, Dave Narey and Paul Sturrock in their team - the date of the last match was 19th March 1975.

Arbroath are currently the best part - time team in Scotland ( above Alloa in the league ) and are on a great run having beat Dunfermline, Alloa and drawing with Partick Thistle and Queen of the South ( along with narrow defeat against Inverness ).

They should bring a support of around 800 - 900 on Saturday and will be organised with a game plan for the match.

I think it's great having them in the league and could end up doing United a few favours against the likes of Ayr and Dundee.

Back in '75 United finished 4th in the league and reached the 2nd round of the European Cup.

Also, Saturday is going to be a hot day with sunshine according to the weather forecast .

History lesson over and really looking forward to the match on Saturday.

Interesting Stat and nice to see the smokies doing well.

However this is the type of game where we have to approach it with a positive attitude from the off and outplay though speed and quality their gameplan.

This is an opportunity to burst their bubble and expand ours somewhat creating a slender points gap at the top.

I wouldn't say necessarily to decimate them but an attitude approaching that in every game is needed.

4000 more attended today than back then, poor time for Scottish crowds in the early seventies on the whole outwith one off big games... The old 18 team setup was sucking the life out of things and the change to the smaller leagues was a good decision

    Not quite

Roar of the crowd, great book and backed up my thoughts on why it should never go back to the bigger leagues... Full of meaningless games from early on in the seasons

Set up we have now i feel is the best in my life time, with the 12-10-10-10 and play offs, lots to play for across all the divisions
