Why did drinkers switch to Lager.

I'm teetotal now, but all my old drinking now drink lager. In the old days I used to drink Hansons or Bank's mild, our group was split 60/40 in favour of Bank's bitter. Away games up north used drink Bitter, games down south Guinness. Never liked Lager, to me it was a women's drink with lime. Hated the booze in Spain.
Was it media driven the switch or just fashionable.

Hi Phil, do you think it was regional or down to bad beer. My locals where all down the Lyng, Prince Albert, Rising and the Leopard.

I used to drink brown and mild, but it had to be a Mann's Brown not that awful Toby brown. One guy I knew used to drink Guinness and black current. It looked like a miscarriage in a glass. Disgusting.

I always put it down to an age thing. The kids with the lager and those who were more mature would imbibe the real stuff.

I haven’t drunk since I was a ****ager but always thought Mild was gross......it smells like a bucket of sick.

In the old days I liked a shandy.

Now I just have an occasional “Hand shandy”.

    Very refreshing.

It was the two hot summers of '75 and '76 that changed me from bitter to lager. I was so hot after playing cricket, and lager was kept so much colder, that I changed and never went back. I must admit though I drink a lot of cider now. I find 'Strongbow Cloudy Apple' a really refreshing, tasty drink.

I think one of the problems we have is that we have to drink what we are given in that effectively 3 or so conglomerates control global brewing brands. Lager sadly is a victim of this with tepid rubbish like Fosters served at every pub you go in to. By contrast, lager can also be one of the very best drinks imo. A genuine Czech Budvar or having spent several holidays in Bavaria, a Lowenbrau or Hoffbrau take some beating. There are some world class lagers but sadly we seem to get a lot of utter s*it all brewed in burton upon Trent

I only fancy Bathams. Although I tried a peaky blinder dark and did like that. Old ales for me not lagers.
