Just thought I'd add a few memories from that game.
I remember it was a clear crisp night but not freezing. My old man took me. We got into the ground pretty early and made for one of the barriers right at the top of the North terracing. The crush barriers were about 8 foot long and there was always competition to get a lean on one. The terracing steps were steep and the view from close to the top towards the Arklay Street end was fantastic.
The ground was packed. I believe wiki shows the record attendance that night as 28000 but I'm sure I remember the Courier reporting it as 28500. Could be wrong.
I dont remember Ian Mitchell's goal, one reason I'd have loved to see highlights. When Kevin Gallagher scored against them in the second UEFA meeting it put me in mind of Billy Haineys goal that night. I think Billy's goal was not so close to the touchline and a wee bit further back but it was an amazing strike and Tannadice erupted.
When he came back from the war my old man used to go Tannadice one week and Dens the next, but that night as we walked away from the ground he told me he was now going to follow my team only. It was a fabulous team performance. They had no answer.
Beating the Catalan giants 4-1 on aggregate sent shock waves across Europe and truly announced United as a name to be remembered.
It would be like Livingston beating Juve 4-1 on aggregate in the UEFA Cup next year.
