I went to that game. The equaliser was a Dean Yates og. A fairly lame header that was neither a pass back nor a clearance....
We played really well and at the time they were flying high with some chap called bobby Williamson scoring tons of goals.
Barnes goal was a break away and run from around the half way line and a cool finish into the corner.
The Yates winner wasn’t exactly Platt but was very similar! And we went bonkers!!!!!
Always loved millmoor. Proper old fashioned ground.
Your memory is far better than mine!
Incidentally, when did one-on-ones stop becoming a thing for us? How many goals did Kevin Bartlett get after beating the keeper in a one-on-one (and how many did he miss)? Ian McParland was also an expert finisher in such situations. Ditto Lee Hughes, of course. Is it just me or do we not create those type of chances anymore - that great moment when your player gets played through and the crowd rises as one to see him take it around the keeper and tap into the net/panic and blaze it 10 feet over the bar?
We don't have any creative players who are capable of playing that telling through ball on a consistent level.
Bartlett seemed to have tons. And only scored them against WBA!
But yes, there were lots. I think a lot has to do with the ball out. I bet most of TJ, KB’s were from passes from don o’riordan or dean Thomas.
And my memory is pretty good for that game just because millmoor is one of only two pro grounds I’ve ever played on (and I’ve watched the 89 video too many times!) The other being saltergate. Both have since become football graveyards!
Which sums up my quality as a footballer.
I was there too. A few of us went up in a mini bus and we were advised to drink out of town. We ended up at a pub in a placed called Newbottle. This was 1987/88 - the season Sunderland went up as Champions and we lost to Walsall in play-offs (which I think had just been introduced if memory serves?)
24,000 at Roker Park that day for a 3rd tier game. Incredible...
Trevor Christie playing for Walsall against us in those play offs made it even worse! Scored against us in the second leg 1-1 draw at their place. We lost the home leg 3-1 on a Sunday? Strangely both the goals we scored in each leg, if I remember rightly were scored by Dean Yates!
