O/T this will cause trouble but hey ho

Why is it that there is applause for everything at games.? My dad was a miller but got on with it.
Why not clap in asda or on the bus.?
    Just wondering?

If it’s football related, especially when it’s our club that’s fine. It’s when it’s people like Nelson Mandela or Princess Margaret that it gets silly.

Blackpool fans stood and clapped throughout the whole of that remembrance event before KO
Credit to them for the respect

Our US based correspondents might be able to help me with this one but I read about a baseball team over there who dedicate every home run to a fan who has recently passed away. I thought it was a classy and moving tribute yesterday.

Much prefer the fans to be clapping in tribute to somebody (usually fellow fans, ex-players, etc) than be fighting or shouting abuse. Seems strange that anyone would be view clapping as a problem

Not heard of that one tony but sounds a good idea. Maybe football clubs could dedicate goals to fans, just a short video on the web site from the scorer e.g. I'm "Player X" and I'd like to dedicate this goal against Peterborough United to "Fan X" who supported Rotherham United for N years and sadly passed away on dd/mm/yy"

Crash, if you'd have taken the time to notify the club about your Dad's passing then I'm sure we would have applauded him. Wouldn't that have been nice?

I don’t particularly like to applaud people I don’t know (they could have been ****s for all we know) but if it helps their family who come to the game then why not.

Luke who was given applause on Wednesday was 29 and died on Christmas Day, how hard must that have been for his family?

I suppose for that moment we are united with a common love of RUFC.
Which fits perfectly with the current management philosophy, it's nice to be nice, etc.

Every Chicago White Sox home run brings a charity donation from the Snelius family in memory of Ursula, a huge fan who died in 2004. It is mentioned every time in the TV broadcast.
