I remember going to York to see Notts play in the old Division 2 days when we used to have the ‘Magpie Special’ trains running. What good days they were. On this particular occasion we were met by a fairly large number of police who escorted us to the ground by a very scenic, but out of the way, route. When we asked one of the policemen why they were treating Notts supporters in this way, he explained that Man Utd were their next opponents and this was a bit of a trial run!
    Happy days though.

It couldn't have been the same trip I went on, we went on the supporter's coach. As I remember it, we weren't told beforehand how far away from the ground we were parked. It was going to be too far for one old gentleman, he couldn't walk that far so had to wait back with the bus driver.

Another time me and 'er went to a cup match at Man City's old Maine Road stadium on the train. There was no food or drinks aboard and we had to stand all the way. We then had to walk, police escorted, from the railway station about a mile to a coach park, then a ten minute ride to the ground where the stand for the Notts fans had no food or drink either. Held back an hour after the game then the whole trip in reverse. No facilities for food or drink for about twelve hours and no warning either. My wife and some others had the good sense to bring our own sandwiches and drink otherwise - what? Did the Notts organisers think about that? Did they bolleaux.

It was a good few years before we went on another "organised" away trip.

P.S. Notts lost 4-1 (Peter Osgood own goal)

Osgood was good, now he’s no good.

Incidentally he is one of only three post war England internationals with three O’s in his surname!
