Thread: My All Time Albion Squad

  1. #1

    My All Time Albion Squad

Often put together my all time Albion X1 but not a squad of 25. So here is mine from 1962 onwards based only on ability. Not included any loan players.

    1.Foster
    2.Batson
    3 Statham
    4 Brown
    5 Wile
    6 Kaye
    7 Cunningham
    8 Regis
    9 Astle
    10 Hope
    11 Clark
    12 Hoult
    13 Fraser
    14 Wilson
    15 Gaardsoe
    16 Robertson
    17 Robson
    18 Cantello
    19 Hartford
    20 Giles
    21 Phillips
    22 Gera
    24 Johnston
    25 Barnes

If anyone wants to accuse me looking at the 68 and 78/79 teams with rose tinted glasses then I stand guilty as charged.

So many great players in that list. Would just like to make a special mention of one, not necessarily lifting him above the others, but Bobby Hope was one of the greatest midfielders ever to have graced the Hawthorns pitch. I just loved watching that man play football.

As a kid Astle was my hero but being as I was not strong in the air but was able to pass a ball I always wanted to play like Bobby Hope. Was he my all time favourite? Possibly.

I wouldn't include Barnes. Far too many quiet games. Graham Williams must be worth a place though, like you I preferred both Wilson and Statham as full backs. so on reflection he probably isn't!
Gssrdsoe... decent enough but surely Martyn Bennett was much better.

Fairly sure Barnes had a better goals per game record for WBA than any of the other 3. Underestimated?

Not imo but its your choice. Who do you leave out based on ability not length of service?

Barnes was terribly inconsistent and not fit to lace Willie Johnston’s boots.

No room for Ally Brown either.
