1988 Sunderland last game of season.

Just seen the game on youtube...
Sunderland won 4-1 at Millmoor...won title.
We managed to avoid definate relegation with Grimsby drawing at home so we had to play a relegation playoff..
I do remember going to that game, 6000 Sunderland fans there.
Shaun Goodwin won man of the match and won 24 cans of Stones presented by Dave Nicholls (whatever happened to him?)
Can't remember the playoff game though..anyone?
Hopefully a 4-1 win for us this time eh..
Oh and Weds lost 5-1 at home to Liverpool.

Dave Nichols went to live in Cyprus and died in 2008. Heart attack I think.

Lost 2-1 on aggregate to Swansea who'd finished 6th in the 4th Division but ended up winning the playoffs beating Torquay 5-4 on aggregate. A bad year for local rivals as Grimsby, York and Donny were all relegated with us.

How things have changed since then when Wednesday were finishing 11th in Division 1 (Prem) and Wolves were winning Division 4 (L2) with help from 34 Steve Bull goals.

Didn't Gabbiadini get a couple. I was there but can't remember exactly, just that Sunderland brought a load and many were in fancy dress.

Attedance 9347. Ground capacity was 13000 then , I think. We also lost 7-1 to them in the Freight Rover Trophy that season - they were quite good!
Probably going to be one of those days when we wish that TS had built the stadium slightly bigger.
By the way, we would never have got relegated in 1988 with that team if we hadn't sold Gareth Evans half way through the season .

No that was a league game at the end of 2000 season. Did you get a knock on the head from one of those bricks

I was in Tivoli that day and my dad along with others had to duck for cover when the bricks flew over...

I was 25 and I also almost 50. Only from the other side of it!

That was the first time I’d heard fans chanting the “champiolay
champiolay song. Hopefully 32 years on we can sing it back to them!

Yes CAM , that Swansea game where ( choosing the words carefully) the Swans fan died, was our final match of the regular 1999/2000 season. Going into the game we were in second place, they were top by one point . We needed to beat them to be champions, but could only manage a 1-1 draw. Both teams were promoted.
