I think I said this earlier, but to reiterate:

By a similar logic if we're judging entry to the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame purely on what entrants did on the pitch then our team Notts County FC (who I proudly watched being inducted in there in Manchester in 2016, for being the first - not the 'best' - league club) don't belong in there either, right?

Fashanu was a trailblazer. This is a magnificent gesture to honour one of our former players. Can't believe some Notts fans are still picking faults with it.

Really? They’re the same people who pick faults with; foreigners, gay people, brown people, black people, lesbians, trans people, the EU, poor people, unemployed people, immigrants, Muslims, sick people, remainers, socialists, the courts. And anyone else who they don’t know, or isn’t like them.

It doesn’t surprise me at all.

Fair enough. I see your point. I just kind of hoped that the joy of an ex-Notts player getting in there would overwhelm the innate ignorance/ homophobia of some of our fans. I'd also hope for some sense of logic, general decency and thinking about others before you speak etc. But maybe it is too much to ask..?

Looking at Fashanu's career record (and his time at the Lane was before mine) we're actually the club he played second-most for after Norwich. And 20 goals in 64 games is a good tally.

Including a magnificent header to beat Arsenal and two goals at Old Trafford to steal a point, four days after which he got injured, was out for the rest of the season and we got relegated. He might have made all the difference in keeping us up (maybe we would have beaten Everton in that FA Cup QF as well). He wasn't the same when he came back, a match against Cardiff he got sent off and although can't remember the details, I remember leaving the ground feeling that something was definitely not right with him, he refused to play on Sundays after that as he'd now turned to religion, which only added to his internal conflict.

I remember watching the wonder goal on MOTD at the time (40 years ago this month)and on the following Monday whilst playing football at break time on the school yard, I managed to score a pretty good goal (which was rare for me) and I instinctively mimicked Fash's modest celebration. The best player in our year turned to me with a massive grin on his face and shouted "JUSTIN FASHANU!!!"
First new players to sign for Notts after I started going to Meadow Lane, Justin Fashanu. He was great, our biggest star and now he's up their with Tommy Lawton. I for one am absolutely thrilled for him.

Unfortunately, on this board in particular it's far too much to ask. You made the big, big mistake of mentioning "some sense of logic, general decency and thinking about others before you speak". While that would apply to most on here, we have a certain element who just wouldn't understand those worthy ideals. Fashanu would definitely never make it on footballing ability alone, but if you look at the huge thing that encompasses the word 'FOOTBALL', his place will become more apparent in the future as those bigoted dinosaurs gradually leave this earth.

Absolute rubbish! Nothing to do with his football ability. Craig Ramage for example has been thrown out of the BBC for a comment he made that HE believed some young black players need to pull their heads in. 'Social Media' was up in arms about his comments. He has made a full and unequivocal apology, but lost his 'contract' work rights with the BBC. I'm not saying anyone was right or wrong, just pointing out the 'backlash'.

This has nothing to do with politics, people's se.xual preferences, colour of their skin. It has more to do with the fact that the player inducted had a very chequered past, to say the least.

I am pointing out facts, you are coming out with your regular left-wing rhetoric, that is your answer to everything - homophobe, racist, xenophobe, 'unemployedaphobe' etc.

Yes Justin Fashunu was a black footballer, yes Justin Fashanu was an openly gay footballer - are they the two reasons he was inducted? If that's the case it is a sorry indictment on our footballing authorities if they hold him as a shining light to black, gay footballers, because Fashanu was under a massive legal cloud which could have been the reason he committed suicide, not the fact he was gay and black and a footballer.

Would you condone Ched Evans being inducted too as a role model to all Centre Forwards born in Rhyl?

Your post was mostly making some sort of sense until the last line.

That last line was so pathetic however it totally devalued all you had said before.

Lullapie lost me after the opening sentence tbh. I mean I read what he wrote but what this has to do with Craig Ramage or Ched Evans beats me. Other than perhaps they're other people whose situation he feels morally outraged about?

Back on topic here's a quote from Fashanu about his career after coming out:

"You have to understand that footballers are very narrow-minded people. It's the nature of the business. When you put yourself in the firing line, you are open to attack. I know I'm there to be shot down in flames."

It's sad that he crashed and burned. And that (male) professional football is still so intrinsically toxic in accepting homo***uality so many years later.

I’ll be honest and say I wasn’t aware of the possible criminal charges against him(in a state where homo***uality was illegal at the time), but I’m guessing many of the people spouting guff about political correctness weren’t either.

I still think he deserves a place in the HoF for his courage in coming out, and as DSR says, that’s something we should, as Notts fans, be quite proud about.
