In that article he blames not winning the game on his own teams inability to have the right quality at the right time, the final moments of a lot of decent moves.

On a night like Friday night it is sometimes unwise to introduce fresh players into very difficult playing conditions & there is a case for leaving on those who are acclimatised. A case made by professionals, we know f all.

I'd like to state now, in no way do I think Robbie is, or should be, immune from criticism. As for your first point, I guess he had faith in the players to eventually get it right but it's easy looking back in hindsight when it didn't happen.
