Ground will still be very soft. Deep spiking used to be a help when the top surface was heavily compacted, but it looks as though its the drainage that takes the water away into the mains system that is part of the problem.

They cant use deep spiking on Dens any more.

The low depth of the under soil heating contrived to make the sprinkler system quite close to the surface...

Thanks hmac.Might explain that a long build up of rain can create the sort of conditions that we experienced recently with our ground being un playable. Any other treatment. remember being at a bowling club and had to wait while the surface water was squeegeed off the green. I'd imagine any king of roller system would just compact the ground even more and eventually make matters worse.

Was there ever any discussion about a 3G pitch being installed? Just interested to know if the costs and possible benefits had been assessed by the club.

Worms stop the earth being compacted but greenkeepers do not like them as they leave worm casts. Golf clubs, bowling clubs and football clubs then have to spend a fortune hollow tining the grass to allow the water to drain away.
