John Philliben was born on this day in 1964. The defender scored in Scotland’s only ever official triumph, the European U19 Championship in 1982. Tommy McLean signed him from Doncaster in 1986 and though not always in the side, he earned the affection of the fans. Sadly he suffered some cruel blows in his time at Motherwell – notably a semi-final penalty miss
