He’s just been on talksport to apologise but he said that he can’t promise he won’t do it again and thinks that he is being criticised unfairly due to his (gypsy) background.

He's one of those sportspeople, businesspeople, politicians that says something really really stupid and offensive because they lack intelligence, lack compassion and have no consideration towards their fellow human beings.
Once they've said it their PR dept reads it and advises them that their actions will significantly affect any current or future sponsorship deals, endorsements, TV appearances , career etc.
They are then advised to issue a statement that effectively states that they didn't really say those things, certainly didn't mean them ( even though they really did say them) and then preach to us all that it's wrong to say such things and we shouldn't do it.
The expectation is then that we all accept that they didn't say it and didn't mean it, so nothing is wrong and therefore all of their income stream and career can carry on as normal.
Unfortunately this individual did something similar only a few months ago that was extremely sordid. Ill leave people to google it if you want another example of the type of person he really is.
