I think the differences seemed bigger when I was young, but realised a lot of the schemed were not that much different as I grew older. Certainly some had their own character, Lochee and the Hilltown, mostly because they were older. While often characterised as tough, full of this or that, for the most part, both then and now, the schemes are mostly filled with ordinary working class people just getting on with their lives. A lot of schemes had patches that are/were more run down, often around the pubs (or is that just my perception?). In Douglas, that seemed to be around the Lea Rig, but by the time you got to Ballandean Road, people kept nice gardens etc. Could say much the same for other schemes.

The beautiful Skarne blocks as I remember it

When I was at the Savies in the early 80s the Modern Studies teacher took us out on a field trip to Whitfield to show us where European money was being spent. I recall him pointing at a block and saying look at the deprivation and one boy shouted out "Oi that's meh hoose"

Lol. That 2nd photo, I used to cut through there going to Greenfield Primary.

The top photo has graffiti by well known Whitfield skinhead Wullie Kelly on the side of the lock up/power plant. I seen him in Asda a few years ago and he still dresses like a skinhead - sta press, doc Martin bates, braces and Fred Perry polo....and still as mental looking now as he was back then.
