A sport you wished you’d tried?

    Hockey for me.

My dad was a superb Sunday morning footballer and an excellent all round sportsman but he avoided hockey at school thinking it was a game for sissies.

Once he was in the army he decided any sport was better than marching so he took up hockey and absolutely loved it and wished he’d done it as a nipper.

I always watch it at the Olympics and enjoy it and think it was an opportunity missed.

Rugby for me, only chucked a ball around a few times and never played a full game. Played hockey when I was at college and although I never took it up as one of my main sports I really enjoyed it. For me it was mainly football followed by swimming, badminton, athletics (predominantly sprints, triple jump and the 1500 metres) and judo. Flirted with boxing for a while too, enjoyed volley ball and took part in a few tug of war events. Although I enjoyed cross country as a kid I never really saw the attraction of running for really long distances. Did two half marathons after zero extra training in my late te ens just to see if I could. Can't say I enjoyed either experience, but that's probably because I couldn't be @sred to train for them. I used to do a lot of cycling too although I would never describe myself as having been an actual 'cyclist' such as Prando or Ketts. Really wasn't a fan of basketball.

Hockey was compulsory for me at Grammar School and blo0dy hated it. Many a' time I was whacked around the ankles by flailing hockey sticks but there were also the psychos who would pail you around the head/body with the stick in retaliation. I had many a bruise after a game, worse than Rugby.

I would liked to have took up golf. Played it a couple of times and didn't think I was too bad, but never bothered following it up. Ive a dodgy back now so that's a pleasure I will never revisit.

Same here Phil. Our grammar school was famed for its hockey teams so we had no choice. I would much rather have played rugby. Even so, I still managed to get in the firstXI even though I was left handed and they only made right handed hockey sticks. Hated every minute of it esoecially when the sticks were flying!

Sport wise, I suppose that I could be described as a Jack of All Trades but master of none! Have competed in rugby (at school), cricket, squash, swimming, athletics, triathlon, football and motor racing. I loved playing squash but it played hell with my knees! After leaving school, having played in the cricket teams, I played cricket for Halesowen Cricket Club in an ‘A’ team for juniors and also for the seconds; I wish that I had carried on playing cricket, I love the game. I have never competed in a cycle race except as part of a triathlon, it would have been nice to have done that in my younger days; I did used to cycle home from school up Mucklow Hill in Halesowen, I was pleased with myself for that!

Loved hockey at school on a really muddy day playing against the local posh school. You could pretend to hit the ball but would hit a pile of wet mud so it splattered all over the opponents faces. Those were the days!
