Ascoli was the nearest city to my Parents mate. They lived in a small village called Santa Vittoria in Mattenano. Not too far from a town called Fermo. Beautiful place and area.

Glad to hear your having a great time

    Champs, yes Ascoli is beautiful.
Just arrived at Siena for five nights.
As said earlier, Sangiovese is my favourite red wine grape

Siena ??? You’ve done an about turn?
Cannot fault you though for being drawn towards Tuscany, Siena was gona be my prompt as first place on way back up.
Really enjoyed our visits there and Campo is very atmospheric.
I’m sure you’ve heard, but San Gimignano (of the towers) is a must see. Poss my fave of lot. Firenze is generally a must and could be good as I’m assuming the crowds won’t be as thronged as they usually are. Pistoia is ok.
Then if your feeling you must visit Pisa, which once you’ve seen tower an duomo not so clever, you could call at my second favourite place - Lucca. That’s the original walled area, not the town. I think you’d enjoy it.
Best reason to head over towards western coast is above La Spezia - the Cinque Terre.
Got to take public transport into it though.
Can’t speak for Portofino , as never visited.
Then onto Piemonte , you lucky git.

Yes, yes, yes to all that, especially cinque Terra but public transport kills it for us

This is the end of our third week. We leave Siena on Tuesday and will take 2 or 3 days to get to Lauterbrunnen, probably over the St Gotthard and Grimsel passes.
Probably a week in Switzerland then the last week in Alsace and the Mosel.

Aaah Lauterbrunnen! Another of our old haunts. On trek from valley up to famous rotating mountain restaurant we camped on ridge and I’ve got somewhere a stunning twilight pic of Eiger Monch Jung ‘trio’ .
Two nights prior we slept on Jungfraujoch as we missed last train down after laboriously tracking across to Eiger lower ridge from joch station.🙄. But what a night - dusk and dawn 😀
