Good. Nice guy, terrible manager. Inherited a team that had been one game from the prem, left us bottom of the pile.
Oh dear...another misrepresentation. I have never referred to Frank Lampard ‘doing the dirty’ on us, but because he left as and when he did he left us in a mess...imo.
My point is that Cocu didn’t inherit a side that was close to promotion...the four crucial players in that side were Tomari, Mount, Wilson and Keogh. The first three had gone long before Cocu took over and the fourth, also the captain, was finished at Derby after about a month of the season.
Most people always though it was a ‘rebuild’ season and it didn’t work out. Now put your wooden spoon away...again!
I'm not going to take sides on this but I stand by my opinion on Cocu, and will point out that For every Keogh there's a Davies - we lost our captain and joint defensive 'rock' at the start of the Lampard season, yet Lampard managed to replace him with the best defender I've seen here for many years. Two things stick out in that comparison, first OK Tomori was just a loanee but AT LEAST WE HAD HIM, Cocu just wasn't connected enough to be able to pull such stunts, and second Lampard stuck by Tomori when he looked a bit lost in his first couple of games (Leeds at home especially) and we watched him grow as a result, I suspect Cocu would have chopped him in and out all season. I'm not just blaming Cocu by the way and I'm glad his henchmen have gone too. I also think Lampard's season was actually a 'middling' one with some massive highlights, but we haven't even had that for a season and a half
Lost the 3 best players from that side who all returned to their parent club. Lost Captain and defensive rock in Keogh. Yes, he was prone to a blunder and if they kept stats of how many blunders result in a goal for the opposition Richard would be at the top of the pile. He also saved us a lot of goals against with his last ditch, body on the line stops. I think his penchant for putting himself about covering for everybody else was his biggest problem. That led to him being out of position too often. His best spells were when he ahd confidence in his central defensive partner and he could concentrate on what HE should be doing rather than "I ought to be there but I'll be 5 yards left of their so I can probably but not definitely do my own job but I can definitely intervene if my partner cocks up". No doubting his effort.
His one big signing missed most of Cocu's tenure with an ACL injury. He had little to no time to evaluate the squad prior to the season starting / transfer window closing. Spent a reasonable sum on Jozwiak but had to wait until he's sold Lowe and Bogle to get the money. His total net spend was around £3M. Aside from Jozwiak, the rest of the incoming cost nowt or, in today's terms, peanuts. He had no money to spend. Hopefully his replacement will have funds for January and will spend them wisely.
I probably rate Cocu alongside Nigel Clough, a victim of circumstance who, under different circumstances, may well have proved a success. As it is, in a points based business, he didn't garner enough of them to "keep the shirt".
Not sure how you got a net spend of £3 million, seeing as last season £10 million was spent on Bieleck alone! So he had an equal amount of cash as lampard did.
I wouldn't rate Cocu at all, constantly switching players, tactics boring, after match summing up incomprehensible and basically overrated. Only a victim of his own inability to manage players and clearly out of his depth in this division.
Exactly as I see it, MA. Lampard inherited a side that had finished 6th, sold the top scorer, added some excellent loans and some poor permanents and finished....6th.
Cocu inherited a side that had finished 6th, was then stripped of its main playing assets, and finished 10th. By no means blameless but not entirely to blame either.
I suspect most people were satisfied with last season...but enormously disappointed with this one.
Anyway...he’s gone, probably for the best given the position we find ourselves in...time to move on.
But who's next???
