I don't much like cities so I'd struggle to compile a list. Of those I have visited the only one I go back to regularly is Paris, I'd happily go back to Marrakesh but Mrs S won't go, so that's out. The other one on the list is Madrid, never been, we were due to go this summer, Bernabeu Stadium tour booked and everything, but Covid intervened. Next year possibly.

In this country York would be first choice, and I can pass the day pleasantly enough in Manchester or Leeds.

In a previous incarnation sinkov, I was the export sales director of a large engineering firm and the job took me across the globe. I developed the canny knack of combining business with pleasure and OMG did I have some pleasure!

I'm actually with Sinkov, in that I prefer to visit more rural areas than cities. Two or three days in a city is more than enough thank you very much.

My most memorable trips have been the Himalayas in Nepal, the Bay of Naples, cycling through France and Italy, the west and north of Scotland and (possibly top of my list) the Lake District.

On my bucket list is Greenland.

I get that 59er, but a week in Hong Kong used to take some beating, especially back in the day when the Royal Navy were garrisoned there.

UK. Chester and York. Loads of history and my two favourite racecourses!
World. New York because it is simply stupendous. Paris and Berlin both because of their history.
Did I mention history anywhere in there?

I visited Berlin pre-Wall coming down and stood on one of the watchtowers on the West side in the dead of winter just before midnight. Eebie Jeebies did not come into it, but I must admit I would like to go now.

You're much more well travelled than me BT, of the 20 on your list I've only been to 7 of them.

At the opposite end of the scale, are there any cities anyone would avoid ?

One that I would not particularly recommend is Bordeaux, I lived just an hour away for nearly ten years so I know it well. It's OK, a pleasant enough place, there are some decent restaurants, but there's nowt there to keep you. I would go in with Mrs S while she wandered round the shops and park myself in the nearest bar, then back home, couldn't get out quick enough, I would never advise anyone to go out of their way to pay a visit.

    Worst cities?

For me Preston and Bradford (UK)

Nairobi (Kenya) and Amman (Jordan) (World)

Amman is the worst by a large margin.

Kibera in Nairobi is the biggest slum in Africa, and is absolutely shameful. We got a guide to escort us round (the money for this contributes to helping the residents). An absolute hell hole.
We visited the "home" (a tiny room with a leaking corrugated roof) in which one elderly woman was looking after three younger women with aids. She made necklaces made from scraps of waste paper and sold them to people like us to try to keep themselves fed. The "drainage" system was an open sewer flowing outside the houses.
Yet, less than a mile away, is the financial heart of the city which is pretty well to do. Talk about haves and have nots...
