    I remember on more than one occasion as kids in short pants not being able to get into the ground and sitting in Leazes Terrace listening to the crowd noise trying to work out how the game was going.

    On other times getting in and with a full house you would have to stand rigid like a log and the fellows would pass you down overhead to the front to sit cross-legged on the grass verge next to the cinder track.

    I also remember Jackie Milburn, who used to race in the Powderhall Trophy event, giving a pre-match demonstration of his speed running a one hundred yard sprint in full kit and the heavy football boots (clogs) of the day, down the Leazes side timed at 11 seconds.
