Match Day Thread: Derby v Salford

Given our recent problems with early doors 'League' Cup games, what do you reckon on this one? Willour new signing proved to be Ravel-ino or raveled up? Will we go a game without letting in from a set piece?

A win, just. In front of an 8K crowd.

Lets hope you got the crowd right at least. Edit some good performances from the youngsters after the first 20 mins, don't get the plaudits for Watson who can't pass consistently butbravo him stepping up for the pen

Plaudits to the crowd, not many there but they truly got behind the team from what I heard

The young lads stood up well, could have folded at 0-2 but kept going! Really impressed with Ebosele and Williams!

Great goal by Morrison having hit the wall with free kick…..

Not sure we could ask for more from the lads seeing as WR had to rest first team players!

Plenty of positives after what looked likely to be another embarrassment.

Agree with Rich. Thought Rooney spoke quite well. Let’s hope we can build on it on Saturday.

Nothing from MA so here we go. No individual points...be a bit too hard on the youngsters.

Allsop...badly at fault for their second but recovered well and showed some assured handling.
Ebosele...enthusiastic, keen to get on the ball and get forward, needs to look up more but quick and very encouraging.
Brown...barely noticed him until the shoot out when he certainly stood up to be counted.
Forsyth...hope we don’t have to rely on him in CD too often but he was often doing the job of two CDs.
    Williams...an encouraging and mature performance.
Watson...as above...handled the shoot out pressure very well.
Hutchinson...very promising, took his goal well, can only imagine he was taken off with the weekend in mind.
Sibley...some great first touches and close control, needed more awareness around him.
Morrison...obviously a talent...excellent goal following the second of two poor free kicks.
Jozwiak...carried on where he left off...ie no idea what people see in him, contributed virtually nothing but shouldn’t have been booked.
Stretton...don’t see him offering much this season on the evidence of last night.
CKR...thank God we’ve got him...a leader, a much needed physical presence and two well taken vi tal penalties.
Shinnie...had one thing to do...and did it. Who said players can’t be expected to come on and immediately convert a penalty? Expect him to be an important player this season.
Rooney...spoke relatively well and his changes worked.
Ref...dire, especially after what we’ve seen in the Euros. Our two bookings were ridiculous...our penalty was debatable but understandable...theirs was just ludicrous, the foul by Forsyth was literally one and a half metres outside the area.

Some folk have no patience, hey, rA?

Physically they were a huge challenge, they are also psychologically ahead and were playing mind games from the off.

I think the kids were overawed for 20 minutes. After that they got into it, and how. Last 15 minutes of the 1st half a goal, maybe more, was merely a question of time. Also the better side in the 2nd half. First 10 minutes of the 2nd half we had 94% possession. Dominance.

0-1. Bloody zonal marking again. Online yesterday some were blaming Joz for not going with "his man". We play zonal marking. He doesn't have "a man". That's why we're poor at defending set pieces.

0-2. Player cuts inside and doesn't get closed down. tries his luck from 30 yards. Allsopp should not get beaten from there.

    Then we started to play.

1-2. Cracking move started by a lovely Joz pass to Sibs, Sibs beats the defender to it and knocks it on to Strets who passes behind Hutch who follows the ball, swivels and tucks it inside the left hand post. Lovely move, lovely shot and a well deserved goal.

2-2. Never a penalty in my mind. Nevertheless, put well away by Kazim.

2-3. There was a foul, most definitely so. However, it happened 4 yards outside of the box. Quite likely the ref making amends for his earlier mistake, something he shouldn't do.

3-3. A mixture of luck and magic. Poor free kick from Ravel which hit the wall. Then he hit the rebound first time...... and what a hit it was.

Penalties. All hit hard and true. Shame England can't do that.

Allsopp had a good game apart from his part in their 2nd
Ebosele played well, got us the non-penalty. Had some good interchanges down the right with Joz, Sibs and a couple of others. Needs to work on the end product.
    Brown was excellent
Fozzy took a calculated risk for their penalty, banking on the free lick not going in and astounded the peno was given. A misjudgment nearly gifted them a goal as well. Decent game all the same at CD.
Williams had a torrid time at the start but grew into the game. Got into some great attacking positions put poor first touches and loss of control saw the odd corner as the only end products. One for the future.
Watson was very good at DM, especially considering his natural place would have been in the 3. He has a future
    Hutchinson idem ditto. Good goal
Jozwiak wasn't double/triple teamed the whole game and he was buzzing around. Some great control from not so brilliant balls, creative passing. We saw why he was bought. IMO we'll see that regularly once Bielik is back. Until then he'll be stuck out wide getting multi teamed. I hope his teammates can learn to profit from the space that creates for them
Morrison showed some nice touches, poor free kick but great rebound. He was selected as part of the 3 but seemed to spend most of his time as part of the 2.
Stretton had the assist for Hutch's goal and only an outstretched keeper's hand stopped him getting the winner late on. Another one to be nurtured for the future

Well summarised rA, you've got the gig if and when MA goes AWOL

    My additional comments

Allsop, kicked out badly a couple of times, good pen save though
Ebosele, looked handy, would make a great outright winger if such a position still exists
Watson, overall impact spoiled by some woeful passing in the first half. Brave pen
Morrison, yes very poor free kicks!
    Jozwiak, a liability
All pen takers, bloody well done, that's how pens SHOULD be taken
Fans, as mentioned above, Quality not quantity

Temporarily, I hope, incapacitated MA so needed something to do.

We certainly differ over Brown (just last night) and Jozwiak (just get rid). All just opinion.

Agree with AF about Ebosele being a potential winger.
