RIP Maurice.
What a fabulous servant to Barnsley that fella was.
He knew lots of people in football.
I’m guessing here - but I think it was Maurice’s links to people within football that gave Patrick the knowledge to appoint the managers that he did.
I know many Barnsley fans didn’t like some of the managers that Patrick appointed - but IMO Patrick never appointed a bad manager - they were all good managers but ultimately failed because Patrick unfortunately didn’t have a big enough slab of money to support those managers in the Championship.
No fault of Patrick’s - and very probably what prompted the change of direction to the present recruitment strategy at the club.
I remember stood outside Chesterfield train station before a match with a small bunch of Barnsley fans and Maurice was picked up in a car to take him to the ground.
I said to the bunch - there’s Maurice Watkins here getting in a car - when he drives passed I want you all to line up and salute him.
Which they did.
Maurice drove passed in the car laughing his head off.
He had a very kind face.
I would have loved to have met him in person.
