"They" say the sign of a good team is to play poorly and still win, but that was almost ridiculous this afternoon. We were completely dominated for sixty minutes, bossed in midfield, chasing shadows and defenisvely wobbly. However, Salford did not capitalise on their superiority and Comedy Chris, for the first time in his career, made substitutions which had a positive effect. Salford panicked, over committed going forward and in the end, if Alessandra could finish we'd have won the game comfortably (rather bizarrely). Anyway...

Norma - 4 - Rooted to his line too often, he needs to be out claiming those crosses. Went down in installments for the Salford goal but made a point blank world class save earlier in the half. On balance, Jensen still looks the better keeper. Norma is suspect on long range shots, hesitant off his line and has poor distribution.

Mellor - 8 - Definitely an improvement on Tanner this season, on this performance. On many occasions our only defender who was awake. Good long throws, decent passing, strong in the air, a few weeks with Beech on the training ground and he'll rectify all that.

Armer - 7 - Thank goodness Bristol City signed the wrong full-back.

Whelan - 5 - Not looking as assured and was questionable positionally on a few occasions. Where has the calm defender who was intercepting the ball and confidently stepping into midfield gone?

McDonald - 5 - Gains a mark for the header which indirectly led to the winner, but the "fittest ever" breezeblock looked all at sea at times and was puffing out of his ar5e. Is Feeney a better option?

Guy - 3 - For the first sixty minutes piss poor, for the last half hour pretty decent.

Riley - 3 - Seemed to be buzzing about everywhere but rarely was able to put his foot on the ball and spray a few passes around. Too hectic in possession, needs to make himself a yard and use his brain more (by ignoring the manager).

Mellish - 6 - Absolute garbage for the first hour, but after his goal a completely different player. Credit to him for chasing a hopeless cause and getting the winner, also credit to him for the match winning / goal saving block towards the end of the match.

Abrahams - 1 - Awful. Fluffed an easy chance on his good foot in the first half, owned by the opposition defence once again all afternoon. His "assist" was him attempting to control the ball and having it randomly bounce off his chest. Needs a rest.

Clough - 3 - A midfielder playing upfront. We need Clough in the middle of the park with his foot on the ball not fighting for desperate long punts with defenders four times his size. He needs the ball to his feet, then he needs movement and options in front of him.

Dickenson - 5 - Much improved. Took his goal really well and his use of the ball was much better today, defensively he was also an asset but drifted out of the game at times.

Thankfully CB identified the problems at HT and changed it round so that we played towards the levels attained before Xmas last year; if he hadn't on the evidence of the first half we could have lost 5 -1. Salford were good.

Norma - 4,5 A good save but a number of errors and poor distribution. I wish he would throw out instead of the high kicking.

    Mellor - 7.5 a good game

    Armer - 7.5 - rarely troubled

Whelan - 6.5 Not at his best

McDonald - 6 I am pleasantly surprised with his improvement this season.

Guy - 4 - Nowhere near where he should be

Riley - 4 Disappointing after strong start to the season

Mellish - 6 - Not pretty to watch but he did what he needs to do - harasses, bothers and is always up there looking for rebounds. He came into Foxy's immediately after the match and wasn't even sweating.

Abrahams - 4 he needs to improve - some decent play but not what we need from a centre forward.

    Clough - 3 - Disappointing

Dickenson - 7 His best game

The new guy from Ireland. 7 Very promising debut.

Alessandra 5 he needs to shoot with a bit of meaning

Manni - only on long enough to sky an intended centre

I agree with most of that Piglet.

We were terrible in the first half. Same tactics as at Hartlepool. What is the point of aimlessly punting the ball forward?

Norman needs to start coming off his line quicker and commanding the penalty area. If he did he could be a decent keeper and would make life much easier for the defence.

Mellor or Dickenson should have been MOTM.

Defensively Mellor looks like an improvement on Tanner. Simple but effective.

Feeney should have been in the back four instead of McDonald.

Riley was our entire midfield for the first hour. I would double his mark for that alone.

Dickenson played well and put in some good crosses. Worth a 7 or 8 for me.

Clough is not fit and seemed to be holding his hamstring after the match. Until he is genuinely match fit he shouldn't be starting.

Abrahams was disappointing again. Brad Young should be given a chance to start.

The referee must be in awe of the Class of 92. He was like an extra player for them.

Gary Bowyer seemed to be complaining to Beech at the end. Interesting to know what his grievance was. Unfortunately like anything else of significance it was totally missed by James Phillips.

I missed the actual incident. What I did see was Comedy Chris scurrying away and Bowyer looking like he couldn't think of a reply.

The frustrating thing about the ref for me was he reffed like it was last season and penalised every touch. Any contact is not a foul and appeared to give the benefit of the doubt more liberally to Salford. He definitely let them off a couple of bookings, particularly that agricultural assault on Armer at the end.

The Clough and Abraham yellows were for not getting back 10 yards and stopping Salford taking quick free kicks. I don't recall the Guy booking.

Was for a late tackle in front of the Paddock. The Salford player made the most of it, but it was a justified yellow.
