This is a test match, with 5 days allocated to it. A green wicket with a weather forecast that suggests it will dry out and get harder.

So it’s “ get your head down” survive the session to lunch and tire out the bowlers.

But no, we can’t do that, we are playing a limited overs format style, try to score off every ball.

Even Root, the best on the day got 50 off 82 balls but then got out having being at the crease for less than 2 hours play.

It’s test cricket, a situation where 50 in a full day but still being there is the way forward to success.

Not flash, bash and spend day 4 and 5 on the golf course.

Btw weather forecast is fine and sunny at about 24 Celsius

To think all those years ago, the selectors dropped Geoff Boycott for batting into a third day. What we`d give now for somebody with his determination and sticking power. This guy was a self made cricketer, his secret was application

I make it we need to score at least another 102 or we will have averaged less than 200/innings over the first 6 innings of this Ashes series. Not too good is it?

If they were dead the likes of Mike Brearley and David Steele would be turning in their graves. Here's something I took from Steele's Wikipedia page and maybe indicates what we're missing today.

"When presenting Steele his cap in the dressing room before his debut, captain Tony Greig felt tears fall on his hand and considered that "Here was a man who would fight for me to the death". His ability to stand up to hostile fast bowling, which other batsmen had struggled to cope with, and attack with the hook shot, raised morale among his teammates and spectators alike."

Also, being ambidextrous I'm sure once all the ribs on his right side were broken he would just have turned around and offered them a fresh set.
