Luke wants to stay at Barnsley

LUKE Thomas’ ‘number one goal’ is to play for Barnsley this season, while Bristol Rovers are not thought to have made an official approach.

Reports have claimed that the Reds’ fellow League One club Rovers are looking to sign the midfielder permanently after he spent last season on loan to them.

The 23-year-old has a year left on his contract and has played regularly in pre-season so far.

The Chronicle understands there has been no official approach from the Gas for Thomas.

Head coach Michael Duff told the Chronicle: “I don’t get obsessed with rumours.

“Other clubs want good players but we want to keep our good players.

“We’re at a club where, if people meet valuations and the players want to go, they go. I wasn’t aware of interest but it doesn’t surprise me because he’s a good player and did well for them last year, so why would they not want him back?

“We will deal with it if and when it happens.

“Luke is more attack-minded than a lot of our midfielders. He’s naturally a winger but he drives forwards and gives us more balance. We want people who want to be here and he’s been top drawer.

    “His attitude has been brilliant.”

Thomas barely featured for Bristol Rovers as they were promoted from League Two last season, starting just ten games – mainly in the first half of the season.

Asked where he sees himself playing this season, Thomas told the Chronicle: “I guess I am not too sure.

“It’s a massive season for me after not playing much the last two seasons.

“I just want to play week in, week out.

“Hopefully that’s at Barnsley but, if not, I will look elsewhere.

“I have been at Barnsley a while but I don’t feel like I’ve got started.

“My number one goal is to play at Barnsley and I would love that to happen.”

Why? Can’t he match his salary elsewhere?

As I understand it, or seem to recall reading somewhere, the lad is, or has been having mental health issues which can't have helped. Again, I think he's a good player if he knuckles darn and gets a run of games. Hopefully he sees working under Duff as a fresh challenge that might give him the impetus to crack on. Man management is key in these kind of situations. Good luck to the lad I say and I hope he shows us what he can do this season.

No Ill will on my part pass. He just doesn’t float my boat. Heart of a pea.

Better off elsewhere in my opinion but we make a loss. If anyone wants him. Not conways model!! It’s part of the scheme, some you win some you don’t.

Understandable Eths. The lad has produced very little in his 3 years here and he came for a relatively large fee by our modest standards.
