    Excessive celebrations

Celebrations in sport are getting ridiculous, in my opinion. So many goal celebrations by footballers are arrogant and often just plain silly. Cricket is going the same way; absurd behaviour when a wicket is taken and even just an appeal for a catch or LBW! The Sri Lankan wicketkeeper was a case in point, going absolutely mental when he appealed. What is wrong with a handshake or a pat on the back? Why go and kiss your team mates? Awful.

    I couldn’t agree more Kets.

Maybe it’s just me but whenever I scored I never tended to celebrate at all.

I used to live the feeling it gave me but I tried to savour the moment in my own head and try to save it.

Which is probably why I can still relive each of them even now and even “feel” the ball leaving my foot or head as it did on the day it happened.

Does anyone else remember Mick Channons' celebrations for Southampton back in the day.
They seem pretty mild compared to some these days

Always reminds me of that Harry Enfield skit with the Arsenal side of 1933 featuring the great Charles Charlie Charles ( "it's almost as if the ball is glued to his foot-it is!😁 ) aping the celebrations style of the 1991 Liverpool side.

(Now if only I wasn't such a technophobe I could post the link😁!)

Certainly the bowler rushing towards the batsman and waving his erect finger having taken his wicket is just ‘not cricket’ !

Used to celebrate like a lunatic when I scored a goal in the playground, down the park, in training and or during games.

It would generally wind the opposition up a treat and so if I scored again I celebrated even more.

That's right, I was one of those annoying gits who actually enjoyed himself and had no problem showing it.

Even when I scored against my lad when we had kick abouts in the garden when he was a kid I was always happy to be the bigger kid; he in turn would celebrate like a lunatic if he scored against me.

We had to stop playing his football computer game when he got better than me though because when he scored and celebrated I started getting a bit 80s terraces with him (in a fun way 😊 ).

Mid 50s now. My one knee's wrecked, the other isn't the best and I can't even run short distances without serious discomfort.

I'd love to play one last game of (pain free) football and have that feeling of joy when the ball hits the back of the net again. Celebrate your victories when you can as you never know when they'll come to an end.

Jeff Astle used to raise an arm, if it was a big game he might raise two. He said in his book that he found celebrations embarrassing. Bomber raised a first and shook hands with the provider. It was their job and they did it with consistency. You can probably see why the likes of the forwards we have now go mad when they score.
