    Giorgi Mamardashvili

Newcastle United have made a ‘formal approach’ for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, according to reports in Spain.

Spanish outlet Relevo state that Newcastle officials have traveled to watch the 23-year-old on ‘more than five occasions’ this season and are aware of Valencia’s €30m (£25.6m) asking price.

Reports claim the giant Georgian is ‘very attracted’ by a potential move to St James’ Park, as his preferred destination is the Premier League and he’s keen to play in Europe; which we are on course to achieve if we maintain our place in the top seven.

Mamardashvili stands 6ft 6′ tall and has impressed in La Liga this season. He’s kept 12 clean sheets and has helped the Spaniards boast the third-best defence in the division, where they’ve conceded less than Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

We were linked with him in Jan and this is one I'd like to see go ahead, think it would be a really good move for us. Would mean we have Pope's successor lined up.

I also worry about Pope with a shoulder injury, and a 2nd one at that.

He sounds like a very good keeper. I have seen him for the national team, but dont really remember much from that game.

Sounds like a cracking keeper, hope its true.

Tbh, have never seen him play. But if reports are correct, then seems perfect to come in and challenge Pope and take over long term.

    Aye he's class like!!!

I absolutely love Pope. Great Keeper.

We know Karius is off to Italy to be near his Pump. Dubs will also see the door not sure if it will be to a Prem Promoted side or he'll go abroad. Good keeper but not a top 4 keeper.

Pope and Mamardashvili, who is an Alison/Ederson model modern ball playing sweeper keeper, are an excellent 1,2 the level of competition will be stepped up at an even higher level. It's an Excellent idea.

Is it a position we critically need to improve? Probably not but we do need to bring in another First team Keeper, so why spend 10-15m on an also ran when you can sign an Isak/Bruno/Botman level player in that position?

The business of bringing in those elite level players with crazy high potential levels as long term investments in the squad will see the high transfer fees appear to be bargains over the course of the contracts.

This would be yet another real Coup for the Toon when the board pull it off. If they really want it to happen.

He'd be a superb signing.. would drop Pope immediately down to the bench.. I'd l9ve someone like him or Diogo Costa from Porto

Porto are my Portuguese team. One of the Companies I represent as a reseller/partner in the Middle East are based in Porto, one of my very good friends Joel is a season ticket holder at do Dragão.

However, my first love of the club is due to the SBR link.

Diogo Costa is another modern Sweeper Keeper style, great with his feet type fella. However, the money touted to sign him is gonna be north of £50m.

    Who knows. Maybe!
