Be very interested to see what they can come up with. We all assume it'll be a mirror of the Leazes but you never know. If it is, it would only add about 6000...wonder if the Strawberry Corner might for part of the redesign so it comes round the corner (although they'd have to buy those houses at the back-and even if they were available, I'm not sure they'd be allowed to knock them down).

Great that it's not just a pipe dream, though. )

Where did you get that figure from Zipp? I think the plans Shepherd had added 8000. The Leazes/Milburn extension added 16000.

Can't quite remember, Kal. I know it was based on 3000 up to the section that starts to curve (mirroring the away end in the Leazes) then there was some formula that took account of the decreasing numbers in each row as they tightened the closer to the pitch the seats got.

Be good if it was 8000 instead.

Depends, by the time upgrading starts. Safe standing could be implemented in the Premier League. That could push up numbers by a lot.

The east stand is the problem, and the properties behind it, which are protected somehow. I can’t see that stopping the project if they want to extend the east stand to bring it into line with the rest of the ground. Money talks as they say and I wouldn’t be surprised if that comes into it somewhere. They could quite easily take them down brick by brick and rebuild elsewhere, with a cash donation for the inconvenience. Also the Council seem to be on board with the owners, who are putting a lot of development into the city already, it would be great if they could pull it off but might be difficult. This has been done before in our area, Beamish Museum is a prime example, buildings demolished and rebuilt brick by brick. Unfortunately all you need to scupper the deal would be one person refusing the offer, maybe a resident Mackem! Will just have to wait and see but very optimistic.

Funnily enough, much as I love the club and would love to see the ground extended...I'd actually be against doing it at the expense of Leazes Terrace.

I think I love the club and the city equally and the relatiobship between the two is beautifully balanced; for me, demolishing Leazes Terrace would change that relationship. Our amazing city has had enough damage from greedy, ignorant and short-sighted developers already with beautiful buildings and spaces destroyed to be replaced by hideous concrete slabs.

Now I'm definitely not equating that with developing the ground-I might have sounded like an architecture geek just then but I'm not and I'm certainly not having a pop at anyone who would take every option available to increase the capacity. I love football stadium designs, too-the bigger, the better. But, for me, I'd rather see us work with what we've got. The Gallowgate is the easiest and most obvious option but maybe there's some architectural wizardry that can be employed to redevelop the East stand on-more or less-its current footprrint.

And I know there's a balance to be struck between achieving progress and preserving heritage, can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, etc but Leazes Terrace would be a step too far...is my humble opinion. Tin hat on...

Nothing wrong with that Zip, I would think that in this day and age there must be a way of putting another level on top of the existing east stand, the founds would obviously need to be reinforced somehow, but I’m not an architect either. When you look at the ground from most angles the East stand let’s it down, which is a pity, but it’s what we have, over to the architects now.
