FAO James Cryne ……. Maurice Watkins

Watching the dynamics and listening to what was said at the fans forum - my thoughts kept drifting towards the late great Maurice Watkins.

Clearly JAQ seems a genuine person - a feisty person who wears her heart on her sleeve when it comes to Barnsley Football Club.
Neerav also comes across as a genuine person who is as sharp as a pin.
It seems Jean and James Cryne are not comfortable when it comes to events like this but IMO they represent the past and the supporters within the boardroom.

So although we have a good mix of individuals within the boardroom - we are not just missing a Director of Football we are also missing an older experienced head on the board that has links to a wide range of other people in sport including the football world.

Barnsley isn’t going to find another Maurice Watkins - as he was a one off - but reading between the lines there is a void within the board that needs filling.

    Neither had Ronnie Glavin.
I’m not sure what that’s got to do with price of potatoes

    Would say John Dennis.
But that’s not the point is it ?
I’m not talking about who cared about the club the most.

“Clearly JAQ seems a genuine person - a feisty person who wears her heart on her sleeve when it comes to Barnsley Football Club.”
Lets hope she has a big heart in January, and gets her money out and shows the fans that she really has her heart 100% in this club…..because it looks like a PR exercise to me.

“ also comes across as a genuine person who is as sharp as a pin.”

Spot on Nudge…. That sharp, he was a large part of a board that didnt know, or didnt declare who was in charge…..

He needs to get that “Pin” out and get it stuck in to getting a CEO in, because it is that sharp that he has allowed the current one to HIDE from fans, deliver nothing really of any value since being here other than damage relations with them, other clubs ( cancelled friendlies) and oversee a debacle that could result (even if we DO get a play off, or promotion place), in a points deduction which could make all season a waste of time….indeed, we could be instantly relegated…..

The sharpness of that pin is dangerous….. just what position would we be if our Chairman wasnt sharp………….?

We're missing an old experienced head in the team more importantly.

What exactly did Maurice Watkins bring to the club during his tenure? Patrick Cryne appointed him in 2013 and in his first full season as chairman we were relegated from the championship. We brought in players like Frimpong (total be11 end), Brek Shea (lazy with bad attitude), Mvoto (shyte), Dale Jennings (who had personal problems), Paddy McCourt (pyss head), Marcus Pederson (loan flop on big money), John Cofie (the guy out of the Green mile was probably better) , Liam Lawrence (well past it), Nick Proschwitz (loan flop again on big money). All signings made by Flicker but sanctioned by Watkins.

In the close season of 2014 we brought in Leroy Lita, arguably the worst attitude shown by any player ever in a Barnsley shirt. We brought in Keith Treacy who was at the time (by his own admission) a full blown alcoholic.

Patrick Cryne then decided on the spreadsheet system over ruling the acting chairman Maurice Watkins. We brought in Winnall, Hourihane, Hammill etc and things took a turn for the better eventually gaining promotion and winning the JPT in 2016.

So, on the back of all I've mentioned, my question still stands- What did Watkins actually do for or bring to the club???
