    Rotherham United accounts to 2023

Might be wrong but don't think these have been posted - an informative summary from Kieran Maguire who does sterling and startling work on football finance: https://twitter.com/KieranMaguire/st...22805871505783

The devil is always in the detail. Clearly there's a lot behind a £5.4m increase to the cost base, and it's not just player costs, even with a couple of transfer fees and some meaty wages.

    EDIT -
In fact, that would only cover two lower value signings and some higher value salaries on the frees. Clearly more behind that change.

Rise in costs is made up of nearly £4m increase in wages - not surprising as this was for first season back in Championship - and £1m in other costs, some of which will just be inflation

Why is there more to it? The full accounts are viewable on companies house - see link

Most of the increase (Nearly £4m) can be attributed to Salaries, NI etc. That will be 100% on players.

My concern would be, how do they bring it line for next season. People seem to think there's a massive pot of unspent TV and transfer money available.

If the club pushed things more and spent more money this season as rumoured, they should communicate it to supporters and be pretty honest about it.

In other words 80k a week extra in wage costs including NI, pension contributions etc.

    Roughly 65-70k on wages. Increase.

That's not a lot in championship terms, but to a club like ours that's huge.

    It's higher this season too.

Compared with our turnover it's clear we are being well backed by the chairman.

we can all speculate about the next and next set of accounts at the end of the day these are the latest set and they are not that bad for a football club, and it puts a lot of other clubs way ahead of us to be targetted by the EFL.

Interesting to see the full details behind some of this. 'Sponsorship', rent, provision of administrative services... all wrapped up under closely connected businesses. Having witnessed the persistent abuse Boothy got every week (and some of it justified - attendances announced were a regular source of amusement in the cash at the turnstiles days), too many seem far too comfortable with the current dynamics of the club and the top of Barbot Hall - why was it taking the pi55 back then, but now we have cleaner toilets many of those arrangements are overlooked?

People were told that the 23-24 season was worth £7m more, although that's gone quiet of late. The transfer fees we've received were most likely offset by the two we brought in, so I doubt that's a major issue - most recognise that. There are supposedly clauses on some contracts for release/decreased wages (our recruitment outcomes would probably indicate that's not true though), and a lot of the current squad will likely depart by way of contracts ending or being sold. Financially next season out biggest hurdle is revenue, not costs. Unless some higher profile firms move into Barbot Hall we're not likely to see much change there.

    We're existing. That's about it.

If you're talking extra % of TV money from the premier league , it hasn't materialised yet.

Premier league clubs have had a number of meetings but haven't reached agreement. So maybe best not to spend this £7m until it's the bank. Was in the news last week.

You can speculate about tie ups with ASD Lighting PLC and throw accusations if you like but most of it is detailed in the accounts. There's about £1m of sponsorship paid to the club from ASD. The club had to pay higher rental for the stadium £1.08m vs £1m the previous year. That's attributable to the increase in bank rates.

Your gripe seems to be relatively wealthy owner doesn't want to spend large amounts of his own private wealth on the club. It's up to him.

What seems to happen, when the club does does generate extra income, is the club spends it and then some. Profit and loss reserves are nearly £6m. Nothing by other clubs standards I admit but there's nothing that looks dodgy in there.

On the other side of it, that is underwritten by the fact that Tony Stewart owns the stadium. He might indeed be an very unambitious chairman who has profited significantly through other business dealings that materialised when he agreed to take on the club. Property deals. Land deals. Lighting contracts etc. The rise of ASD Lighting results in the last few years up until around 2021 is more than impressive. Tailed off a little this last couple of years. (check the accounts)

There's no doubt he's made some mistakes but he's been a good custodian of the club. Maybe it is time for a change but people need to stop speculating and making stuff up about the clubs finances. The financials make sense, so why try and tarnish the guy?

    Just don't get it.
