Which one? The one that played for the Vale in 1921?

John Johnston - 19 year old nippy smallish winger who has come from nowhere over the last 12 months. Plays at same level that Dan Shelley is now struggling to keep up with. Very much a punt in the dark for the future and "signed" to prevent other clubs getting in front of the queue.

Johnston sounds promising, but I hope it's not a case of tiers before bedtime, worth a punt only because it wouldn't cost much.

We reached down two rungs in the League hierarchy to take West: hardly an unqualified success, and we've cut our losses.

We reached down seven levels to take Guthrie, and the jury's still out on him.

Now we would be going to tier eight for Johnston.

We all know the attraction of such players by now: they're cheap. It would be tough to hold on to Premiership Academy boys, though the club is to be congratulated over Bradders.

But in general, as my old grannie used to say, you get what you pay for.
