I've posted this before, but for the benefit of anyone who wasn't online a year go. Who do you admire as a footballer? (not necessarily who's the greatest). For me it is Johan Cruyff. I've always admired the way he plays football and in my view he is the greatest footballer ever.

Getting down to just 1 is difficult, the Brazil team from the 1970's would all qualify in my book. Messi has to be up there from today but I'll choose Zico.

When he's fully fit Messi isn't too shoddy :star:

Its always difficult with greatest footballers, cos the game has changed so much. Stan Matthews, Tom Finney and Peter Harris from long ago, Bobby Moore & Bobby Charlton from later on, Maradona,(dirty little cheat) & Pele. Now it is Messi for me in modern times.

I hate to admit it - but Suarez.

John Charles was quite useful.
Duncan Edwards would have been one of England's best ever, (perhaps he was).
George Best hard to beat.
Pele of course.

Stanley Matthews? He was in his forties when I saw him play for the one and only time but he still looked class.

Pele probably the greatest for me. Beckanbeur-sheer elegance.
Proclaimer's shout is decent, Zico in the 82 WC was a sight to behold. That Brazil team was the best to never win a WC in my lifetime.
Gazza for all his self induced problems was right up there in the mid 90's IMO. We've not produced such a natural talent since I reckon.

That Brazil team of '82 was tremendous, it was Eder who stuck out for me, that beautiful left foot he had, reminded me of myself! B)

As a kid my favourite player was Steve Heighway, again elegant and left footed. Another player who shone for me was Le Tissier, and he should have shone for England on many more occasions.
Best player right now has to be Suarez, he's just unbelieveable.

I liked "supersub" too SD, George Best was the best ever, Sir Bobby and Pele the most respected best, Messi could end up topping the lot.

Has to be Cristiano Ronaldo for me, he has proven it in the 2 best leagues in the world. IMO I think if Messi came to the Prem he wouldn't be as good because of the physicality of it, I'm not saying he still wouldn't be great but I just think Ronaldo tops it for me.

But in 5 years time I think Neymar will be up there.

Steve Heighway though was great to watch, 2 footed if I remember (which all players should be considered the money they are on!)
