Wigan Athletic have signed former West Ham United target Markus Holgersson on a free transfer, SportsDirect News understands.
Sources have told SDN that Holgersson has signed a deal with Championship side Wigan.
The 28-year-old Swede was able to sign even though the transfer window had expired because he was a free agent.
He recently left MLS side the New York Red Bulls where he helped them win the MLS Supporters' Shield. The Swede moved to New York for free in 2012 after spending his career playing in his homeland most notably for Helsingborgs.
Holgersson, who has one international cap, rejected a move to struggling Championship side Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the month and was thought to be interesting Leicester City, but has decided on a move to FA Cup holders Wigan.
The Swedish defender was also linked with a move to the Hammers earlier in the transfer window with boss Sam Allardyce desperate for new recruits.
