A great performance from Lizzy. First saw her compete in the English Schools Junior Girls Pentathlon where she finished ninth. That was in 2003, she competed as a Combined Event Athlete up to Senior level at school.

Just for interest Jessica Ennis finished 15th as a Junior Girl in 1999.

Not exactly sparking much interest is it? Seems a great shame really.

Well done to the girls curling team - a bronze and all without the use of tongs! :D

Let's hope that the men can crack the gold tomorrow!

Congratulations to Lizzie Yarnold for winning gold in the winter Olympics. The expert coaching provided by David Beckham on how to ride a skeleton was invaluable

Canada takes Women's Curling Gold and Women's Ice Hockey Gold. In the latter, the US was leading 2-0 with less than 4 minutes left. Canada's women scored two goals to tie it up then won 3-2 in overtime.

Does anyone know the significance of 'having the hammer' in curling?

TundraWolf

Each side "throws" 8 stones per end. The team who scored a point(s) in the previous end then shoots first in the following end. Thus the other team throws the last rock, giving them the hammer and an advantage. After taking three in the third end, with the hammer, Canada leads 5-1 and shoot first in the 4th end, thus ceding the "hammer" to Great Britain. Looks from here that Canada will get the Gold, GBR the Silver...

I love watching curling, like chess/snooker on ice.

Eve Muirhead, GBR curler, a cutie:

The men may have lost in the curling final, but we must not overlook what an achievement it was to get there.

Congratulations on the Silver you guys! :D

Ends today, I believe. I wonder if many will notice?

I will be pleased to see the return of the Saturday afternoon football programme on the BBC 'red button', which has had to take a back seat in the interim! :/

There were two lasses on Jonathon Ross last-night who had won medals, they said they were flying back to SOtchi today for the closing ceremony, there must be some money to be had participating in little heard of sports. Cant remember my PE teacher saying to anyone, you've got a good career ahead of you in the luge. Well it's not as if we could train down the local cresta run, with a personal coach.
I used to enjoy watching winter sports, but Ive only seen the odd bit of the winter olympics this year and tbh within a couple of weeks I will have forgotten all about Sotchi.

I remember the local ponds used to freeze every winter and attract people from all around for a free skate, but I cant remember the last time the ponds froze over, global warming is definitely happening.

Congrats Tundra! I thought the winner of the US-Canada semi would go on to win the gold. US was deflated and not interested in the bronze game, but congrats to Finland, who have medaled in 5 of the last 6 olympics in hockey.

Was rooting for Sweden in the final, mostly because of all the Red Wings that play for them, but when their captain Zetterberg went out for the remainder of the Olympics (and most likely the regular season for NHL), I didn't think they'd have what it took. But still impressive to finish with a silver without your captain.

I'm not much of a nationalist when it comes to sports outside of soccer and hockey so it was disappointing to see the US fail to medal. But the nice thing about hockey for me is that most likely, a Red Wing will find success even if the US doesn't. Motor City legend Steve Yzerman has said

I have to be honest i haven't watched any of it, football will always take a preference to my sporting week.

At least i can watch eggheads again on Monday and not just see one in the mirror ;D

Fair Play, Michigan, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the NHL's Original Six. Many SW Ontario hockey supporters are big fans of the Red Wings and I always like to see them do well, unless they are playing my Habs!
