Anything about Wolves - pictures, anecdotes, movie clips, whatever.

Starting with the match that is still the record attendance at Old Trafford. Wolves v Grimsby, FA Cup Semi-Final, 25 March 1939.

Attendance: 76,962.

Woody, I have researched this and the dates those three players were at Wolves together were 1961-65. So that makes it Wolves 1964 Caribbean Tour:

21 May 64 beat Chelsea 3-1 in Bridgetown, Barbados.
24 May 64 beat Trinidad 4-0 in Pointe a Pierre, Trinidad.
25 May 64 lost 2-3 to Chelsea in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
27 May 64 beat Chelsea 4-2 in Kingston, Jamaica.
29 May 64 beat Jamaica 8-4 in Kingston, Jamaica.

Which particular game this was is anybody's guess!

Manchester United v Wolverhampton Wanderers 26 March 1949. FA Cup Semi Final at Hillsborough. Press cameramen squatting on their little black cases or lying on their stomachs in the rain were part of the landscape at big football matches...and this is what happened when a shot went just wide of the post and heads towards them. Stan Pearson, Manchester United's inside left is lying on the ground (centre), having shot just wide of the mark. Daily Herald cameraman Bert Abell took rapid action as the ball headed for him. His dive for safety produced an involuntary release of the shutter...to record this picture as Billy Wright of Wolves standing behind the keeper looks on. The final score was a one all draw. Wolves went on to win the replay one nil.

The 31st August 1986 Brian Little is appointed Wolves manager replacing Sammy Chapman, after half a dozen games I thought under this guy maybe we've got the one to lead us out of the deepest hole in the clubs history, little (excuse the pun) did I know he would last fewer than a dozen games as Wolves boss as he was sacked and replaced with Graham Turner it was a decision I was furious with at the time but hey the rest is history!!

Here you go Wokes, another research program for you. The Los Angeles Wolves 1967 [I think]. They played in a tournament in North America with other UK teams that adopted cities to represent. No idea how we did result wise. We must have been good though because it looked liked that handicapped us by making us wear our shirts back to front!

The only player I don't recognize is the one with his arm on Knockers shoulder.

Woody, it wasd The 1967 United Soccer Association League.

In this tournament Wolves played as Los Angeles Wolves and played their home games in LA. They won the Western Division and faced Eastern Division winners Aberdeen in the Final at the Los Angeles Coloseum.

27 May drew 1-1 v Bangu in Houston (Woodfield).
4 June beat Cerro 2-1 in LA (Hunt, Burnside).
7 June drew 0-0 v Stoke in Cleveland.
11 June won 2-1 v Hibernian in Toronto (Thomson, Dougan).
14 June beat Sunderland 5-1 in LA (Buckley 2, Hunt, Dougan, Knowles).
18 June beat Glentoran 4-1 in LA (Thomson, Dougan, Hunt, Knowles).
20 June drew 1-1 v Aberdeen in Washington DC (Burnside).
25 June drew 1-1 v Shamrock R in LA (Wharton pen.).
28 June lost 0-1 to ADO Den Haag in San Francisco.
30 June won 2-0 v ADO Den Haag in LA (Wharton, Davies).

As we hope to equal our eight successive wins record created in 1988, I thought that a reminder of those eight matches might provoke some nostalgia!

15 Oct v Wigan (H) W 2-1 (Gallagher, Bull).
22 Oct v Bolton (A) W 2-1 (Dennison, Bull).
25 oct v Blackpool (H) W 2-1 (Mutch 2).
29 Oct v Gillingham (A) W 3-1 (Mutch, Robinson, Bull).
5 Nov v Southend (H) W 3-0 (Streete, Downing, Bull).
8 Nov v Bristol C (A) W 1-0 (Mutch)
12 Nov v Huddersfield (H) W 4-1 (Mutch, Streete, Bull 2).
26 Nov v Preston (H) W 6-0 (Bull 4, Mutch, Vaughan).

Then we lost 1-3 at Northampton on 4 December.

Regarding Tundra's comments about statistics in another thread, I have found that the champions of any of the major Leagues seem to have a run of at least six successive wins during their season. Whatever happens at Walsall, at least we have surpassed that! :D

Some of our readers will remember the excitement generated by a series of floodlit friendlies played at Molineux in the 1950s, matches which thrust Wolves into the spotlight. Some of the games were televised by the BBC - it was extremely rare for any game to be shown then outside of the FA Cup final. Here is a largely unsung hero of the great team of the late fifties early sixties. Bobby Mason. Always in Broadbents shadow and left out of the 1960 Cup Final team for Barry Stobart. Home grown player scored between 50-60 goals in his five seasons. For some reason never taken seriously though by the fans at the time. Pity.

Some great pics coming on here now, which is what I had hoped for.

Woody, for me, the Wolves forward line of the late 50s was always Deeley, Broadbent, Murray, Mason, Mullen. Stobart did a great job in the 1960 Cup Final, but I do think it was very hard on Bobby Mason not to be chosen at that late stage.

Mason's career record with Wolves of 54 goals in 173 appearances was a record to be proud of!

Birmingham 0 Wolves 1 (1959-60): Bobby Mason's shot does the trick for Wolves on a day when they kick off as champions of England.

Another blast from the past, from left to right, the great Ted Farmer, Cliff Durandt [the Stump] and the absolutely useless John Kirkham.

Cliff Durandt was one of three South African players associated with the Wolves late fifties through early sixties. The others were Eddie Stuart and the winger Des Horne. In fact Durandt was supposed to be the replacement for Horne but he wasn't good enough to hold down a regular place in the team. A hard working but very ordinary player and plug ugly to boot.XD

Still part of the great Wolves tapestry though.

This is a very special thread.
When you support a club that does actually have a great history, a club that almost certainly instigated the European Cup competition, a club that dominated a decade, a club that lent our national side a gentleman, all five foot eight of him, who would break football world records with his appearances and captaincy . A club that had a player that was hailed as the 'Complete Player', a player that some say could have been the next George Best until he found his path/faith in life.
A club that was SO close to winning a major European trophy, a club that won the same trophy twice in six years, twice being the underdog, especially the second time when they were playing the current European Champions.
A club that could make an eight year old boy on his first visit to The Golden Palace in 1978 walk up the steps in the North Bank and be totally blown away by the sound and especially the sight of one of the biggest 'behind the goal' stands in the country, it was

The 1974 world Cup is the first one I can remember vividly and these guys made it essential viewing on ITV because of their knowledge, humour and in many cases massive egos! if only such a good group of pundits could be assembled for this years competition!

It broke my heart Ev. I was just a kid and had started watching Wolves in 65/66 when Knowles was just emerging. Over the next couple of years we all (or most of us anyway) started to realise we had an absolute superstar in our midst. Typical Wolves really when the best player the club's ever had (with the possible exception of Peter Broadbent) just walks away from it. You couldn't write it :(

Just been having a bit of a sort out in my office and discovered a Sunday football supplement from 6 February 2011.

Wolves 2 Manchester United 1

It was interesting to note the Wolves team from that day:-

Hennessey; Zubar, Stearman, Berra, Elokobi; Milijas (Ebanks-Blake 88 min), Henry; Hammil (Ward 64), O'Hara (Foley 59), Jarvis; Doyle.
Subs not used: Hahnemann, Edwards, Craddock, Fletcher.

Picture: Elokobi equalises for Wolves with a tremendous header from a Jarvis cross on 10 minutes:-

1877, your question about whether the John Ireland stand was the biggest in the country at the time, aroused my curiosity. I immediately thought about the East Stand at Chelsea.

There may have been bigger than that Chelsea stand at the time, but I am not aware of a new stand that matched it's capacity.

The John Ireland/Steve Bull stand was opened on 25 August 1979 for the League match against Ipswich. Capacity was 9,348 with 24 executive boxes. The East stand at Chelsea was opened for the 1974-75 season and had a capacity of 19,104.

Having been in both of them, almost at the beginning of their term, I thought they were both absolutely huge and didn't, until now, realise how much difference in size there was!

I think that you are being a bit unkind, Woody. He made a total of 495+13 appearances for Wolves. That doesn't strike me as the track record of someone who was talentless!

Hi Woody! I was intrigued by this one and the fact that nobody took you up on your challenge. The only way I could crack it was to go through the records. When I found out who it was, I couldn't believe that I hadn't recognised him!

If I am right, it has to be Frank Wignall...doh! ;)

Heavens Plater, who rattled your cage?

We have spent time, post match expressing our views on the game and players. You often have some very forceful opinions, not that I always agree with them. Please do not start working on the Brian Clough principle that you are not always correct, but you are never wrong.

Your input and reading of games and tactics is always valid and a good read although you do get obsessed with negativity over certain players. You have a thing at the moment about Clarke comparing him to Dicko and what they both bring to the table. Accept that they are different types of player.

Dicko thrives on his movement and pace while Clarke can hold the ball up well and play others in. He must have been doing something right or he would not have scored all those goals at Coventry.

Now to the real point of my reply. You appear to have an obsession with a vitriolic venting of your spleen towards Woking and his posts. You are becoming obsessed with his post count to t

On reflection I am going to say something elso on the matter.

I have written dozens of posts over the years that would probably have better left unposted but I've written very few that I'm utterly ashamed of, this is one.

The more I think about it the worse I feel about it and Ian you are right, I can post a load of bollox.

I am 49, fairly well educated and usually of sound mind but that outburst was more akin to a 9 year old street urchin with learning difficulties. The language was unacceptable and I apologise to Woking for it and to anyone else who was offended by it.

That really is my last word on the matter.
