I thought I would resurrect the thread that has disappeared from trace concerning ex-Alex players.

I see that former Alex starlet, Nick Powell is back in the Wigan side tonight, following a recent injury. Perhaps we will also see him featuring in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. Nicky Maynard is also in the starting line up against Yeovil.

Lee Molyneux has hit the net again for Accrington tonight, to go with the hat-trick he grabbed a couple of weeks back. As it stands with Accrington beating Morecambe 2-0, Stanley are now just 8 points behind the play-offs, whereas at the start of play they were 3rd bottom.

Molyneux ended up with a brace last night, which now puts Stanley 10 points behind the play-off positions, because Plymouth won. Nick Powell grabbed a goal and one player who was dumped by the Ice Man, Mark Carrington, scored for Wrexham. Matthew Lund scored for Rochdale and was also shown red.

Not so good that Shaun Miller grabbed the winner for rivals Shrewsbury today, although for once I was happy that the Vale beat Tranmere, with Tom Pope grabbing a goal. Donaldson was on the score sheet for Brentford, whereas Audel became a bad boy, being dismissed for Lincoln.

Only saw that Powell goal on a recording of the FL show last night. Just reminded me of all the brilliant goals he scored for the Alex. This lad (still only 20) doesn't do ordinary...he scores goals with quality written all over them.

Once again, Ryan Lowe was on target for Tranmere, scoring his 19th league goal of the season. This was the man who many said was past his sell-by date at L1 level. He could have done a job for us this season.

Another one that got away, did the business once again for Fleetwood on Saturday: Antoni Sarcevic. He should have been retained by Steve Davis. Perhaps his attitude was wrong at the time, but as with Grant & Inman this season, maybe Davis should have preserved with this very talented young man.

... Antoni Sarcevic ... Perhaps his attitude was wrong at the time ...

If the reports are to be believed, indeed it was - he burnt his bridges. He had to go. If you don't have discipline, you're going nowhere!
Probably had ideas above his station and maybe L2 is his level anyway.

Ryan Lowe on the other hand? Well, take solace from the fact that at the time, he wasn't cutting it so he had to go - but this is one guy who has clearly improved with age! Pleased for him - if not for Tranny!! ;D

I am in total agreement with that. Sarcevic would not have been good for the Dressing Room at a time when the atmosphere has been extremely fragile.
Lowe left us when we had an abundance of strikers. His marked improvement has been since he went, and especially at MK Dons, rather than when he was an Alex player. Sometimes that is just the way the cookie crumbles.

Disagree. Sarcevic should have been handled better by Davis, just like he did with Grant and Inman ...

But why?
For all we know, Sarcevic may have told Steve to F off whilst Grant and Inman may have been behaving like 2 petulant school kids in class.
We will probably never find out.
I for one certainly won't criticise Steve over that.

About 3 years ago, I remember reading a comment by Chester's then manager in "The Chester Chronicle" of how Sarcevic arrived from Crewe with low confidence. Chester certainly turned him around. Whether his loss of confidence was due to work or personal problems we can only surmise.

Michael Higdon who played in red a very long time ago has signed for Sheffield United on a two year deal. I wonder if the 30 year old could have done a job for the Alex, or perhaps he would not have wished to return to a club where some of the fans were antagonistic towards the player?

Maybe the management should have been booed and hissed, for not playing him in the way that would get the best out of him. Motherwell had no problem cottoning on to this.

Anyway, a player would come back if the moolah on offer was sufficient. But it never is, so let's not make this a question of Higgy's 'sensitivity'.

A bit harsh, VindePays. It was 'the management', i.e. Dario, who converted Higdon into a forward from the attacking midfieder of the youth team. He got some stick for that at the time, and Higdon got some stick, but he was trying - too early after his conversion - to fill the post Ashton void. Surely Dario was proved right by his later success in Scotland.

He certainly did get a lot of abuse towards the end of his spell with Crewe and perhaps that is why he decided not to renew his contract with them and move northwards. Although he was "active" at the time Lowe, Maynard and Varney were at the club, Ashton had moved on almost two and a half years prior to Higden's move away from the Alex. I reckon that he has proved himself to be a capable striker, hitting goals wherever he has played, especially the 40 he bagged in 72 appearances for Motherwell. Now here is a player who can still score goals and is helping Brum in their quest to rise up the table. Donaldson scores the only goal against Rotherham today.
