WOW is all I can say!

2 questions:

1) How did Gestede hit it over the bar from 1 yard out?

2) How are we not in a playoff spot?

2) How are we not in a playoff spot?

1) I've no idea Pooch

2) because although we obviously can play like this, we choose not too usually when a yeam is below us in the table :(

Loving this though, I only chose not to go after Friday's pathetic showing. Wish I was there now though ;)

I love the way we're winning the ball back and actually making smart decisions in the midfield.

If Gestede knew how to control the ball and make a decent pass he'd be an excellent player!

It's quite frustrating watching this, everyone positioning themselves well, everyone taking responsibility as a team, quick passing, not leaving it all to the player in possession. Why oh why, particularly after playing this way against QPR, did they disprespect Yeovil so badly on Friday. And Brum, Bournemouth and Shef Wed at home as well. These lads can play when they want too.

Thats it though Dan ..at home we set up not to get beat ..if we set up like we want to win the game ..this is how we can play ..too much caution when we play at home for some reason

Yup, Jekyll and Hyde, Pooch. The 2nd half formation was the same one as they played Friday. It's a mess and doeswn't work.

Still, 3 points and the results have been very kind to us today. Just hope Weeds can hold Florest now :)

The comment above says a lot i.e. 'they can play like this when they want to'.
So the key question is: why is that?

We all have our own opinions on this, but the fact remains regardless in that whatever it is that is creating this problem/dilemma it has to be corrected in order for us to move on.

My stance has always been that it is the ultra cautionary approach that yes, initially created the stable platform that we now have, but has been retained right through to this point now.
It may well be that somehow this squad will squeeze into 6th place, time will tell. But if not, I am still of the mind that because this squad is now a GB squad he should be given next term in order to demonstrate whether or not he is/has progressed into the manager we desire that goes out for each game positively.
He only has to look down the M65 to see what can be achieved with that approach.

I agree. Stick with GB!

We have made progress under him, that can't be denied. Let's give him next season to see if we make more.

If we do, we might pass our neighbours on the way down :D

Rvblue

Yes well done and proved GB can do it when he wants to.

The nucleus of the squad is certainly there if he can add a midfield general.

Injuries and consistency the key for next season.

I still can't accept that it's a matter of "attitude" GOING INTO a match. That would suggest we went into the Yeovil game believing we couldn't win it. Why would that be so?
In terms of tactics, the majority of us agree that playing both Lowe and Williamson centrally is unnecessarily cautious and leads to negativity. However, how many people would have clamoured for the inclusion of Kane and Olsson?
I have managed teams at various levels, and the fact is, I found through many years that some opposition just doesn't "suit" your team. It's almost as if the two teams' strengths cancel each other out. That is not to say you don't try and do something about it as the match progresses, but I found that once a pattern had been established, it wasn't always possible to change it. Sometimes, it's as simple as how well a team deals with the threat of your centre-forward(s).
Looking ahead, I suppose Reading are now favourites for sixth place, but we know anything can happen. The good thing about

Aucks sez - "I still can't accept that it's a matter of "attitude" GOING INTO a match. That would suggest we went into the Yeovil game believing we couldn't win it. Why would that be so?"

Dan sez - other way round Aucks, my reading of the game against Yeovil was that the players thought the win was a foregone conclusion. Hence they really didn't play to win, they played like they'd won. Total disrespect to Yeovil. Had they played for 30 minutes out the 90 like they had against QPR or Brum in 1st half, they would have got the goal that was needed to win. Quick passing and movement would have done the trick.

AucklandRover
22-04-2014, 09:11 PM
Dan - you might well be right about complacency. In a way, I was really responding to those who have suggested that our EFFORT and ATTITUDE have been variable. I just can't see why those would change from match to match. The players know what is at stake, and - to a man - I am sure they would love to have a crack at the PL.
The Birmingham game seems to have been very open, and that clearly suits us much better.

DanRrr
22-04-2014, 10:14 PM
I think that's the whole iss Aucks. Effort and attitude get replaced by complacency and visa versa, sometimes in the same game. And god forbid we go 3 or more goals up, as our players get nervy as hell. It's quite frustrating at times. Still, everyone enjoys a good rollercoaster from time to time ;D
