The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare by Damien Lewis, great read about the forerunners of the SAS during WWII, described as "butcher and bolt raids", it's a history of their founding and operations. Mental stuff.

Currently reading 'Map of a Nation - a biography of the Ordnance Survey' by Rachel Hewitt. Was an impulse purchase with a Waterstones voucher my ma got me for Christmas, but it's a lovely book really.

I'm currently reading "The Prize - The Quest for Oil, Money & Power" by Daniel Yergin.
Have to admit that it is pretty heavy going with a sh!tload of information but you do find out quite a lot about how oil exploration and exporting has been key to numerous conflicts around the world. My only gripe with it is that it tends to jump back and forth within a decade so it can confuse slightly of where you are in the grand scheme of things.
I'm led to believe it only goes as far as 1991 so that's a bit of a shame as I would love to know how the US/UK have been messing about since then.

Just finishing off Barnaby Rudge, by ****ens. A hell of a dry read, but getting better towards the end.

I've just about read all ****ens books now and would have to say Barnaby and Tale of Two Cities are the weakest of his writings IMO.

I mind at school a teacher once told me ****ens wasn't meant to be read by boys like me, implying I was too thick, which may well have been the case, but I did like reading and since then I have read, bar Our Mutual Friend and enjoyed them all, so GIRFUY you bitter auld bag.

The Establishment: And How They Get Away With It by Owen Jones

A great insight into how far Britain has moved to the right since 1980 (unbroken Tory and Tory-lite rule for 35 years now). Gap between the rich and the rest has never been wider and successive governments still roll over to the Murdochs, Amazons etc.

Selling off state industries, no support to key / strategic employers in hour of need, etc. etc.

A real eye opener.

Rounded off my Cormac McCarthy binge by reading No Country for Old Men. Bit anticlimactic if you're trying to read it like a more traditional western, but I suppose he does that on purpose.

Great read if you are interested in the progress of human knowledge since the 1500s. Provides a lot of background to the lives of scientists that made significant discoveries as well as explaining just how we progressed from "the Sun revolves around the Earth" and "It is God's will" to quantum mechanics, evolutionary biology etc. A good read and very educational.

Sometimes when I'm particularly hung over I'll spend an entire day reading a science fiction novel cover to cover.

Yesterday was The Three Body Problem, by Cixin Liu. Seemingly it's taken China by storm, and they've just released English translations of the first two books in the trilogy. It's hard SF, based on an actual problem in orbital mechanics, and ends up dabbling with sh!t going on in 11 dimensions, all more or less supported by current physics theories.

It's really interesting if you're into that kind of business. Although I imagine it's a f*cking nightmare if you're not, like.

I'm trying to read a book a week this year. It's going quite well, I'm on 24 already. Currently reading Moby Duck, which is a sort of documentary thing about a chap who spent a few years chasing around the pacific rim (and eventually the atlantic I think) in the wake of several thousand rubber ducks which fell off a container ship in the 90s and have been floating around the world's ocean currents ever since. It's quite interesting, and as an added bonus I discovered a bus ticket from Seattle in it (got it in a charity shop).

Killer Instinct, written by one of the producers of Natural Born Killers about her experience of trying to get the film made and released. Not great but some interesting stuff in it. She absolutely hates Quentin Tarantino and says that many in the biz are basically chancers(sp) who got lucky.

The Player, novel about an immoral film exec which was the basis for the Robert Altman film. Good.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, had meant to read it for ages and finally got round to it. Very interesting and much different to the Ridley Scott film.

Bossypants, Tina Fey's memoir which was pretty good all round. A very entertaining read.

Most Dangerous Game, famous short story. Good story and I will now seek out the film.

Sunset Ltd, script in novel form about a black guy who saves a white guy from committing suicide and then tries to persuade him his life is worthwhile. Meh.

Next up is The Shining by Stephen King, should be good.

Currently reading The Undercover Economist by Tim Harford, which is decent.
Very interesting section on price targeting, basically the methods by which firms identify customers who are willing to pay more for products. So for example IBM made's cheaper printers actually cost them more to produce than the ones which sell more expensively, because the only difference between them is that they've put a chip in to the lower-price ones to make them run more slowly. They literally spend extra money slowing them down, effectively sabotaging their own product, so they can create two price brackets.
It does make sense in a way though, if you think about for example software - they develop the full, professional-level version first, then strip out a load of features for the cut-price freebie or "home" edition. So more effort actually goes into making the one that markets for less (or even no) money.

"what would happen if the whole worlds population all jumped at the same time in the same place"

"in the movie 300 they shoot arrows into the sky which seemingly blot out the sun, is this possible and how many arrows would it take"

David Priestland: "The Red Flag - The History of Communism".

A bit of a reinforcement of all the stereotypical received wisdon in the West (history is written by the victors and all that), and insanely taking the view that from 1789-1989 everything happening in international politics was in a vacuum with neither capitalism or anti-capitalism being given the credit for having to react to what the Red bstds or fascist bstds were up to.

He draws fine parallels between the content of Plato's Republic, Rousseau's writings and Marx and Engels's development of their theories, and the shift from viewing society through a sociological lens to that of the economist.

About 700 pages, so it'll still be my current read when those dull, arid, violent, anti-fitba wallopers The Masons come calling, giving me an alternative to the onfield 'entertainment' for a couple of hours.

Finally got round to this. Kept it for flying home after this trip and nuked it over the two flights.

Not bad, read it in two sittings which is a sign of a decent read. An autobiography mixed in with his love of the Dons. I enjoyed

If you see this Ally, alot of similarties between us even though we are 10 year apart.

Spent alot of time in Newburgh as a youth, missed out on Scotland School boys at the last trial, Neil Simpson was a coach at one point(even though i think the guy is a *****), both Ellon Academy Alumni and of course we were both in a boy band.

Dont know if its because it was Kindle version but McKimmies name was spelt wrong every time."Stuart". Sack the Kindle man

Also you manage to mention Mr Dunbar in a published book. I laughed there. The amount of times he opened the fire doors from the hall into smokers alley and bellowed words to this effect "Mr Pacman, once again i catch you puffing away, those things are no good"

Anyway, good effort min

Docherty by William McIlvanney,

Life in a west coast minning town, set in the early 1900's. Quite a dark story so far.

Lords of Chaos - Robert Jordan. 6th book of the Wheel of Time series and I think I'm going to sack it. Just bored of the same structure to each book (good at the start, long stretches of journey/quest guff, and then a battle at the end).

Golden Hill - Francis Spufford. Found it a bit tough going at first but it's fair rattling along. All about a British stranger arriving in 17th century and the havoc that ensues. Much better than my appalling synopsis of the plot.

Recently read:-

Ardennes 1944 - Anthony Beever. Excellent.

Since I'd last spoke to him, hed climbed Everest twice, was going back for a third, set the uk free diving record, retraced the journey that Shackleton made & near starved himself filming a C4 doc in the @rse end of Canada.

Currently reading the two from the LA Confidential quartet that I hadn't read yet ("White Jazz" and "LA Confidential" funnily enough) from James Ellroy. Also want to track down his "My Dark Places" book about his mother's murder.

Also reading a book "Outback Stations" by Evan McHugh about the big aussie cattle stations and a book called "The Tipping Point" by psychologist Malcolm Gladwell.

Just finished "The Big Short" about the US sub-prime financial crisis, on which the film of the same name is based. The film doesn't touch on half of stuff in the book. Funny how it's not theft when committed by blokes in collar and tie though ... :-|

The whole "its not cheating because everyones at it" attitude is mad. he still thinks he deserved to win the races he won because he trained hard, even though when he didn't get transfusions it showed he was an average cyclist. Right pac (or anyone else looking in) I'm off on a short holiday next month and looking for a good book or 2 for flight/chilling out. Any recommendations? Got to be honest I'm more of the Darren Mackie book club persuasion than that of your fine selves. Don't really go for makey on sh*te or fiction as I think some folk call it.

Really liked the 'confessions of a highland hero' that was mentioned on here a while back (I think) also really got stuck in to 'soldier, spy' on a flight recently. Last book I tried was T2 but wasn't for me. Loved the film though.

Anyone any ideas?

I dinna read makey uppy stuff

If you like fitba autobiographies, Paul McGraths Back From the Brink is great, Ibrahimovic, Pirlo are both funny in a very unmodest way, both worth a read.

Fitba related wise -
Behind The Curtain by Johnathon Wilson is a decent book on eastern European fitba,
Das Boot by Raphael Honiigstein (Story of Germany rebuilding from grass roots up)

Away from fitba The Dirt by Motley Crue (you wont need to be a fan) is the best book ive ever read.
The Forgotten Highlander by Alaistair Urqhuart is brilliant too,
Gentle Johnny which is a biography of a safecracker called John Ramensky who spent a lot of time in Peterhead Prison, very good read too.
The Secret Race by Tyler Hamilton about doping in cycling, some eye opener that

Most likely pick them up for pennies on ebay

Das Reboot was a fascinating read shows what a shower of ****s run our game

The Dirt is simply a classic I ken folk who dinnae like Da Crue and they thought it was ace

I kin this states that your no into fiction BUT I would really recommend a book called Rogue Nation. Written by Alan Clements (married to Kirsty Wark no that that's important). Its set in 2014 and follows the hundred days leading up to Scotland becoming independent. (The premise obviously being that we had voted yes rather than no). No usually my kind of book but I absolutely loved this and cant recommend it highly enough to anyone else.

Also have to agree with pacman on The forgotten highlander by Alistair Urquhart. If this was fiction you'd complain it was too far fetched. That someone lived through what this man went through is incredible.

I've been reading Unknown Pleasures & Substance by Peter Hook (finished the former, half way through the latter) about Joy Division & New Order respectively. Great insight into what it was like to actually live it as opposed to reading a critical perspective from afar.

I might read Barney's book next to get his side of the story.

Ive not long finished Unknown Pleasures myself. You can't help but like Hooky, even though you know he's a bit of a walloper. I was going to move onto Barneys book as well but the reviews make it sound like it's just page after page of him moaning about Hooky.

I'll wait for the Stephen Morris book, where instead of slagging off the pair of them, he'll take the reader behind the scenes of the rise and rise of The Other Two.

Aye, I have heard that, which seems to vindicate Hooky's side of the story. :)

For all the frequent jibes in Hooky's books they don't extend to much beyond saying Barney is a miserable **** and (latterly) a prima donna, which isn't really the most cutting of criticism, and he does go out of his way to give Barney the credit he's due especially where New Order is concerned.

With the strippers shut down there isn't so much to do in Benidorm so been sitting outside the campervan reading. I took 'Citadel' by Jordan Wylie with me. He was an ex army dude who found himself in the horn of Africa as security for merchant ships who were at risk of piracy. Arrrgh.

Loved it and soon finished it so took a walk up to the market and bought 'Storming the Falklands' by Tony Banks. Getting in to the first chapter telling us all about his child hood being brought up in Dundee when he drops this clanger:

'Then came 1968 and an event that changed my life. It had nothing to do with student rebellions or riots. I became a Celtic supporter. This was a momentous but largely random decision. My choice had nothing to with them being an Irish and Catholic side. I simply saw that they were top of the league when I looked in the newspaper and thought, that'll do me. I've supported them ever since.'

Not sure it's worth reading on. >:(

Gives a good account of what is involved in hunting down potential terrorists in this country. Turns out these guys were called out to the attacks in Glasgow (the ones where Smeaton saved the day). Driving all the way from London on blue lights. The books ok but a bit of a damp squib, a bit like said Glasgow attacks.

Got through most of this on holiday and just finished it now. Really enjoyed it.

Written by a detective who was in charge of finding the missing Sian O'Callaghan in 2011. Fascinating story that leads to questions over the murders of lots of young women. One seriously sick f*cker is in jail but seems like he could be responsible for a lot more.

Googled the case to see if any thing else had come up and came across this page which gives an insight in to the whole story.

Was mincemeat the deception taking the dead homeless guy and throwing him in the sea?

Mondo, that's the one. The idea and how the story develops is a great yarn and if it was fiction, you'd probably say "good story, but could never happen in real life", but it did.

The whole Garbo story and how that develops culminating in the deception over the Normandy landings is brilliant. As above, truth is stranger than fiction.
