A lot of truth in this thread. Can hardly stomach looking at those photos: check those reprobates, with their cold, dead eyes. Millionaire-idolisers - all tories, probably wear t-shirts with union jacks on them and go to sleep wi' a signed photo of Cristiano Ronaldo on their pillow. The average voter. Gads min.

I watch the odd game, but not as many as I would have done once upon a time, but to be honest, other than an Aberdeen game I don't watch that much scottish football either as it generally involves one of the cheeks.

I did think it was one of the most ironic quotes ever last week when Pep from Man City said 'the money from Chinese football is ridiculous and will destroy the game".

He is not wrong, Chinese football could be the nail in the coffin, but English Football has been at the forefront of ridiculous spending for years and joking aside, i think English football is utter ****e. Its marketed very very well and breeds the illusion its fantastic.

However, like all economical bubbles, the football one will burst eventually. Over inflated ticket prices, player wages, ridiculous transfer fee's, huge debts and higher tv subscription rates for viewers will ensure it cant last forever. It may take a company like BT or SKY to go tits up, it may take a huge club or two to go under or it may take some rich **** like Abramovich to walk away from and the rest will come tumbling down. Lets not forget, the 1bn he has ploughed into Chelsea is a LOAN!

One the major factors surrounding the financial crisis of 2007 was that not many saw it coming. The big financial players took it all for granted, got greedy and the whole lot came down. In the US, Mortgage backed securities were still deemed a good investment even when the companies behind them were told it was going to collapse. Football is perhaps a different animal, but the principles are the same.

Take Bournemouth, a club that spunked £40 last summer and play in front of 11,500 fans at Dean Court... they are purely financed through TV money.. if it goes, they go and there are many clubs budgeting purely on TV money. Its completely unsustainable. BT and SKY combined spent £5.1Bn on English football and another £1bn on Champions League football... its an absolutely incredible amount of money, but will it last? It may not go tits up this year or next, but it has to one day. The wages and debt will outstrip revenue so much that it has to fail eventually...

See, stupid celebrations dinna really bother me.

That usually starts at training and is usually an indicator that there's a good spirit at training.

I had nae idea what Jacko was doing (I thought it was a "kiss the guns" type gesture) and I've nae noticed Christie's dance, but these things usually start as a wind up at training.

Didn't realise Christies dance moves were a copy of anything other than of some of my moves fae Boogaloos back in the day.

It doesn't bother me. Some celebrations are timeless, some are of the moment, but the reality is he's a 20 year old loon showing a bit of enthusiasm and excitement. As a 40 something year old mannie it's a level of enthusiasm and excitement I can only fondly look back on.

Uzbek-born Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov has made a £1bn bid to wrest control of Arsenal from majority shareholder Stan Kroenke.

But with Kroenke showing no interest, the bid has in effect been rejected, though Usmanov is yet to receive written confirmation.

The Financial Times reported Usmanov made the offer last month, and that Kroenke has yet to formally respond.

Metal magnate Usmanov owns 30% of Arsenal's shares.

He is, though, not part of the board or decision-making at the club.

£1bn to take control of Arsenal... and he owns 30% already. Bonkers stuff and further proof why football is f*cked.

Wages rose 12% to £2.3BILLION!! XD f*cks sake.

In the Championship, overall revenues increased to a new record level of £556m in 2015-16, and have risen by 74% in the past decade.
But for the third time in four years, clubs spent more on wages (£561m) than they generated in revenue, resulting in a record operating loss of £261m. This follows two seasons where losses have been reduced.
Clubs in the Championship stand to see their revenues jump by at least £170m from promotion to the Premier League, rising to over £290m if they survive one season.

Disgusting really!

I dont think the guff football is going to be able to carry on the way it is now. I read the other day Arsenal are offering Ozil 280000 pounds a week if he signs a new deal, even with the money these clubs get from Sky and sponsors this gravy train is going to come to an end some time and leave a lot if these clubs in a mess. Especially once the foreign owners get bored and take off on a new hobby.

Speaking of Sky my old man was saying they are now charging you for each Sky Sports channel! It's worth using a VPN as a lot of them wont cost you anything. I pay about 7 quid a month for IPVanish and find it easy to use home and abroad. I cancelled it for a while then got a warning letter from BT telling me I shouldn't really be downloading Rouge One. Nosey b*stards.

It's not actually the internet service providers who are snooping though. There are companys set up with the sole purpose of monitoring illegal sites and torrent services. They then contact the providers and grass you up.

Interesting article on Sky this morning, albeit ironic, about football transfers in world football.

Adam Parsons, Business Correspondent :

What do football clubs and anxious socialites have in common? No, this isn't about dreams of a champagne lifestyle, nor about falling out of nightclubs on a Saturday night. Rather, it's about bad cases of FOMO.

"Fear of missing out" is a real thing. As a noun, it's now in our dictionaries. As a business imperative, it drives on our football clubs, who live with the morbid fear that they'll lose their place at the top of the world's most popular sport.

And with good reason. Recent years have seen a succession of clubs, many of them famous old names, sent into a ghastly spiral of relegation from the top league followed by relegation down the divisions. Alongside that has come financial crisis, an exodus of players and dwindling crowds. It is a horrible spectacle that every single club dreads.

That's why they do whatever it takes to mitigate that risk. The biggest clubs in England don't worry about relegation, but they do fret about missing out on Champions League football, on struggling in the league and, ultimately, on losing their lustre.

A clever coach can take you so far but, increasingly, ambitious clubs across the continent have come to the same conclusion about the best insurance policy against FOMO, which is to invest in a succession of players who are, hopefully, a bit better than the ones you already have.

So today brings a special frisson, a particular tingle of energy. Because this is the last day when a Premier League team can buy a player this year. After 11pm tonight, you're stuck with what you've got.

In the language of football, the transfer window doesn't merely close, but slams shut. And it invariably slams to the echo of last-minute deals, of hastily-arranged medicals, and of faintly comical tales of players rushing down the motorway to sign before the deadline.

These are the cliches of football transfer windows, but this one's been different - disruptive, sometimes acrimonious and, above all, ludicrously cash-laden.

Football has got itself into a swirl of ridiculously escalating costs, predicated on the assumption that income will always go up... The same assumption previously made about the value of tulips, houses, dotcom businesses and gold.

Nothing represents that more than the £200m transfer of the Brazilian player Neymar from Barcelona to Paris St Germain. Four years after a murky deal took him to Spain, PSG bankrolled an even weirder deal to take him to France.

Why weird? For one thing, PSG's money comes almost entirely from Qatar. For another, there is no way on Earth that you can justify that transfer on any sensible business grounds. It simply doesn't make sense to pay such a vast sum to sign one player.

Yes, he's a very good footballer, but no - there is no way they'll get back the cost of the transfer fee, Neymar's £500,000 weekly salary or the sums paid out to middle-men, including Neymar's father. This is not a football transfer, it's a vanity purchase.

But what this absurd deal has done, has been to recalibrate the expectations of European football clubs. Barcelona spent the money on signing the promising French player Ousmane Dembele in a deal that could be worth £135m.

Liverpool's attacker Philippe Coutinho has been valued at something like £120m.

Mundane players are now being touted around for fees of £15m, £20m or £30m. And FOMO is leading anxious clubs to buy them.

There are those worrying about all this spending. "I think it's unsustainable," said Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, but not before orchestrating his own £218m spending splurge. Among that was about £158m spent on the team's defence - a higher level of defence spending than Ghana, Bosnia or Afghanistan.

His concern may sound slightly ironic, but the word is accurate. Football has got itself back into a swirl of ridiculously escalating costs, predicated on the assumption that income will always go up. It's the same assumption that people have previously made about the value of tulips, houses, dotcom businesses, gold and a thousand other things. And history suggests that it almost always ends badly.

Nobody knows what will happen to the next round of television deals in England, France, Spain and around the world. Yes, the income might go up - but will it cover these rising costs? Will transfer fees continue to follow a Neymar-induced spiral? Will we lose the green shoots of financial prudence that, surprisingly, began to sprout in the Premier League?

It's a fear of missing out. "Just one more £20m player, and we'll be safe". But that £20m player wants a four-year contract, and a signing-on fee and £100,000 per week, and suddenly the deal will cost £45m and he might not even get in the team. But every other player now wants to earn at least as much as him.

These are the finances of exuberance, of excess, of bubbles. As its window closes, football should be nervous.

It is obscene if you think about it morally, but that isn't going to stop people going - no more than the huge amounts of money Mayweather/McGregor earned stopped people wanting to watch the fight, the huge amounts film stars make stop people going to the cinema and so on.

Will the bubble eventually burst? Possibly, but there are some reasons to think it won't matter that much if it does. Some of these clubs are backed by states and may as well have infinite resources. Even the ones that aren't explicitly owned by countries have a kind of under the table de facto guarantee that if they got into serious financial trouble they'd find a way out of it. At worst they'll drop down the leagues and come back again like Sevco. There is essentially a zero percent chance Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG (and so on) will somehow cease to exist. Governments won't allow it, UEFA won't allow it, so there's no real jeopardy. Even a catastrophic financial collapse would be forgotten about in a few years.

I sort of disagree. For these clubs to crash in the first place, there would have to be a burst of the bubble or less demand from the fans to pay these obscene amounts. If either happen, the so called 'fans' will walk away. There is no affiliation when it comes to these 'big' clubs and they will soon find something else to focus on.

Football is just another fad for those with money to burn. The hardcore bunch will always go to games, but the glory hunters and the masturbators of transfer windows will vanish quickly. Lets face it, half the guys in the stands in England or Spain etc do not anything about football. Its about prestige and signing multi million pound kids with sh!te haircuts. Transfer deadline day epitomises English football and its as cringy as it is immoral. W@nking over £1.5bn being spent is utterly tragic and football has forgotten itself.

The whole deadline day thing is a complete embarrassment! There will come a point where those in the stands will just eventually give up on this! There was an interesting app on BBC website that showed that Neymar would take 24 minutes to earn my annual salary! It would take me 424 years to earn his annual salary.

F@ck that. It is obscene!

Aye, but in your industry it'll be some chunt in a suit who does about 2 hours work a week who'll be the one earning the millions, being flown around in private jets, and not the chunt (i.e you) who actually does the work. There's money in fitba whether we like it or not, and i'd much rather it went to a player than some arse who bought himself his seat in the game.

Fitba is about the most socialised industry on earth. No way the highest earning doctor on earth will ever have grown up with nae shoes on a beach in Portugal. No way some prick shareholder of an oil company is going to end up ruined just so his business can pay a Mud Engineer 10 million a year.

Its nae fitba that obscene, that honour falls to the industries that value board members and shareholders over workers.

SSN having a a major chug over the obscene 1.5b quid spent by guffball teams this summer. How is it a good thing.

Only 4 teams recieved more money than they spent

On a SSN related point...

I f*cking hate Sky News generally and have a particular venom reserved for SSN, but my Mrs wanted to catch an update on the hurricanes last night and stuck on Sky News, which rolled into a Sports update with the lassie announcing:

"RANGERS are now just 3 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership after a 4-1 win" and there ended the SPFL roundup.

I'm thinking about paying them to block all Sky channels reaching my house

Sky Sports News is appalling. Every hour it's the same 55 minutes about Nathanial Clyne's left hamstring and 5 minutes of contractually obliged 'other sports' of which Scottish football is considered part of.

I genuinely feel embarrassed that I am in some way financing this whole nonsense. Kept Sky Sports for the Lions tour, red zone nfl and cricket but I don't watch it nearly enough to justify the costs. They now have a channel solely devoted to the EPL. It's fu(king sh!t.

Must say I binned sky nearly two years now but still on basic package so we can sky+ when we are oot. Everyone should cut down the packages or bin it totally. The spfl hardly gets a mention unless it's the ugly sisters! Mobdro seems to work well!! Alledgedly!!

Yay, even harder for Scottish fitba to compete...
Thought Sky were in rapid decline, can't see this increasing their uptake?

Sky must be getting desperate to pay that much for the diddy English leagues. The only people who watch those games are those clubs fans, neutrals aren't interested.

Just checked my Sky Account and it turns out they are undercharging me and I'm not actually paying them for the Sky Sports package I 'enjoy' :D. Moral/Financial Question for you. Do I:-

a ) Fess up, because it's the right thing to do
b ) Fess up, because I don't want to be hit with a big bill further down the road for the services I have used
c ) Keep schtum and if they discover it and chase me for money say "well I've nae watched it because I didn't think I had it" and hope they cannae prove I sat and watched Middle*** v Es*** the other day

Thoughts?

It's their fault for undercharging you so just keep quiet.

I was undercharged by my utility company (First Utility, the Huns of energy supply). One year later, countless phone calls & ombudsman intervention later & they still won't accept the 'it's your fault you Hun b'stards' defence.

I can prove he watched his Sky. Its all there in post #245 :)

First Utility (avoid the c*nts like the plague) sent a guy round to read my meter, who made an @rse of it, then wanted to charge me £120 to get the same guy round for another shot at it, then had over 25 different guesses at what my bill could be, ranging from them owing me £20, to me owing them £1000.

If anyone is with them, or thinking of changing, I can't stress enough how utterly shyte they are when they encounter a problem.

Anyway, ditch your SKY & stream the cricket.
