Enjoyable thread this. Why did they demolish that magnificent spire darn Regent St? A crying shame. It's the same wi Cooerthouse railway station, av seen some pictures o that and it was far grander than the midland one and coming in on a viaduct as opposed to the antiquated barrier system we currently have in place. I appreciate these buildings may have been deemed perhaps unsafe but instead of restoring them and keeping some character in the tarn centre they demolished them in favour of the concrete monstrosities they are pulling down as we speak. Kin new market has been started with no expense spared ant it, thull nivver learn will the :?

Dear old Fred, one of my heroes. One of his favourite catchphrases in his Bolton accent- "Make a mistake up 'ere and it's half a day out wi the undertaker" :)

We wo working in Blackburn t'other day and a could see that magnificent Chimney stack at Darwen- India mills. A great piece of architecture and an astonishing feat to build considering some of the Stones on the overhangs at the top weighed around 5 tonnes each and were somehow hoisted up there when it was built in the 1870's

Just found this

In the 18th century, a gatehouse was built at the entrance to a Manor Farm, on what is now the A61 road. This round structure remained there throughout the building of the estates of New Lodge and Athersley. It was located at the junction of the A61 Wakefield Road and Laithes Lane but was demolished in the early 1960’s. This junction, around which the local commercial and shopping centre was built, became known locally as the “Roundhouse”.

It was to allow the sun and the winds help dry the pitch , a drainage pipe collapsed under the ashes in front of Old Brewery stand and that area was constantly boggy , i think it may have been RIMMOS idea ? Strangely enuff it seemed to do the trick , and kept the pitch playable until close season when major work was carried out on the Drainage

H T H :O

The reason that area was constantly boggy was all the p1ss on the cinders under the stand
I think they called them toilets
Were there any toilets for the puddin burners Roma?

I often think why didn't they just put seating in for the terracing? Instead doing up the whole ground just modernising? That way at least the corners would have been filled in ;D

I always said the corners should be filled in

That's Ponte & Roma now on board only about 6000 to go to get 51% majority

Here's one for SB & Roma
Why do they use cats eyes in the middle of the road?

Go on then Ziles. It's got to be a jooak answer.

Did tha know the still mek cats eyes at Percy Shaws Factory in Halifax ? Percy invented them fo the purpose of identifying the Middle of the Road by means of reflective beads set in rubber, which is my answer.
