I've just watched MOTD2. McHugh gets the ball and a red card; Mata doesn't get close to the ball, makes contact with an ankle, and gets a yellow. Something wrong there.

It's difficult not to see this as an example of one rule for big teams and another for little teams. Man Utd and Rangers (the Keirnan tackle on Hammy) get different treatment to Motherwell (Skippy and Carl tackles). Even worse in some ways was Craig Thomson giving Celtic a penalty against St Johnstone yesterday. Never a penalty - the wrong decision. Amateurish, stupid and it certainly looks biased. We have too many refs full of their own self importance and not understanding they are there to help the game not to be the centre of attention. It's a hard job made more difficult by all the TV coverage, but they need to have the ability to use common sense, a balanced view, a maturity in how they conduct themselves and less pomposity. Right now they are major contributors to the demise of our game as fans are being turned off from Scottish football by their bad decisions and arrogant attitude which are spoiling football as a spectator sport.

Refereeing in Scotland is of a poor standard riddled with inconsistency. We saw that on Saturday when 2 identical fouls were committed. For one a foul was given and a yellow card issued; for the other no foul was given.

The refereeing system is still in the dark ages. Officials really need to start justifying themselves to the paying customer by explaining their reasoning for major decisions. Erroneous yellow and red cards need to be rescinded as they can affect a player's income and a club's results.

I can see where the game becomes non-contact and every player wears an orb
