I know a lot of people say "once they leave us, I don't care what they do", however, I am always interested in what former players of the mighty AFC are doing. This thread is for news on former Dons, either good or bad.

I'll start and say I see Maddison started for Norwich last night in the league cup and got a goal and an assist. For me, Maddison will never make the top grade (too lightweight and greedy), but he will still make a good living out of football.

I saw him a couple of months ago on Schoolhill.
He had a hold of some minker that looked like he had been caught shoplifting in Boots.

Cannae really see big Brian as a copper, if the guy had said please nicely he might have been allowed to escape.

Not a big fan of following ex dons once they leave the club and especially the ones who choose to go and play for another club, hence the reason for not really feeling the "love" for hayes for example.
But there are a couple worthy of a mention in this thread and big Brian is certainly one of them, one of the nicest gentlemen ever to pull on the red jersey and I believe whatever he turns his hand to his management can be assured of true heart felt genuine effort and commitment day in day out, go on big Bri go yirsel.......
Another worthy of a mention is Jim Leighton, whats he up to these days.
And any aberdeen "legend" thread would never be complete without an honorary mention of the one and only Darren Mackie :D

Ok Ok Ok I'll get ma coat.........

Jonny will be back at Pittodrie in 12 - 18 months time.

I've had the same thought.

He took a while to settle with us after being the main man at Caley, he won't get that at Celtic. If he doesn't perform he'll be benched and they have numerous players and the funds available to replace him. He's under pressure to perform every time he plays now, he'd been able to do as he pleased with us for years with little pressure after those first few months.

He said himself he had no interest in going to England, we would be the obvious choice if we could afford him in a years time..

Great read ... I always liked Stuart Kennedy. He made that position his own while he was there .... but particularly good tae read positive stuff about Bobby Clark. B.C was a teacher at my school .... and was known that, as a teacher, he insisted that us wee laddies call him 'Mr Clark' ..... as was correct - him bein a teacher .... and expectin the same courtesy/respect other teachers demanded.
Problem was, this was known ... so those chancers, big-cheeses and arseholes in our midst, would play the 'big man' and call him 'Bobby' .... which they were welcome tae do in every other situation outwith that of being a school dude in his charge ...... whereupon, they would get 'the scud'. ..
And Bobby, Sorry, Mr Clark, could dish out a mair decent 'scud' than maist 'proper' teachers.

But, my fave Memory o' Mr Clark, aside fae him bein 'Bobby' atween the sticks for AFC, was that time at Powis school playin fields ... Ah wis in goals, cos Ah wis last pick .. bein (regarded as) ****e onywye else on the field .... and Ah pulled aff a hoor o a lang divin save. And ma goallie hero ... Mr Clark ... applauded me and commented loudly ... athoot swearin ..... aboot ma save ;)

Proud moment for me :)

He wasn't very good at all but when you replace him with the guy who was his backup last season then you can see why we are in the state we are. O'Connor and this season's Arnason are not a patch on Taylor which is saying something.

I compiled a stat last season of when Taylor was playing and our defence had by far the most blocked shots in the league, the big lanky streak of p1sh got himself between the ball and the target a lot more often that anyone else in the Premiership did.

Ash Taylor had quite a lot of games where he had a complete nightmare, off the top of my head are,

ICT away 1-3 when he gave away a pen and was at fault for the other 2 goals.

Maribor home 1-1 he was at fault for the goal.

St Johnstone away 0-3 on a Friday night a few seasons back he was horrendous that night.

Dundee United home 0-3 His debut when he set up a Dundee Utd player for one of their goals it might have even been GMS.

Im sure there were a lot more that I have erased from my memory, the point is if he was playing on Saturday instead of Arnason or AOC we would have probably still lost 3-0 because he was shyte and wasn't good enough.

I don't think he was an enigma as much as he was just a bit patchy. Same with Diamond who now seems to be etched into the history books as a categorically awful player - yet I can remember plenty of games where he looked the business.

I actually thought he was pretty solid bar some poor patches of form which mainly came at the beginning and tail end of his time at the Dons. As you say, when he was bad he was rank rotten. Probably still a better option than any other CH options we have currently bar McKenna.

Any league where he would get time on the ball. Perhaps with a terrier like Cammy Smith beside him he might have got it at the Dons but he spends a lot of time watching the ball being launched over his head. I suspect he is better than people give him credit for but , possibly, not as good as he thinks he is?

One problem at Aberdeen is (with the exception of Shinnie) our players can't fight and our fighters can't play.

Cammy Smith was never good enough,89 appearances 25 of them starts which is a lot more chances that most get and I can’t recall many games where he justified being kept on.

I’m pretty sure if he was signed from the lower leagues in England instead of coming through the youth system no one would be debating whether we should have kept him or given him more chances than he got.

Mason89
07-05-2018, 10:19 AM

89 games wasn’t a proper run of games?

There have been players over the years who have played less than 10 games and been written off by some so I’m not sure how much games he should have got to prove his worth,200 or 300 games?

As ever, donunder makes some good points .... and McLean may be languid but he always wants the ball, has a good range of passing, can hit a ball well, is two-footed and can play in a number of roles/positions. This last point has perhaps meant he has many detractors - the old “jack of all trades, master of none” argument.
I feel a lot of fans will realise how good he is once he’s gone. He will take some replacing ....

ANyone who goes to our games will have seen the real Kenny McLean since the turn of the year, or pretty much since he signed for Norwich, he is more like the player I remember when at St Mirren. What has been the turnaround I have no idea, but my own opinion of him is that we didn't get the best out of him for most of the time here and I don't blame the guy himself, was played in the wrong role most of his time here.

I hope he does a job for Norwich.

I was reading an article on BBC Sport about Swansea appointing Graham Potter from Ostersunds as their manager.
I knew that ex-Hamilton boss Billy Reid was Potter's assistant manager at Ostersunds, but then another name on their coaching team caught my eye.
Apparently the Swedish side had a recruitment analyst named Kyle Macaulay.
I was vaguely aware of that name being the same as an ex-Dons player around the time of Steve Paterson's reign, and a hazy recollection that he might have been Paterson's nephew.
Turns out this is the same guy who didn't really make much of an impression at Pittodrie, but seems to have forged a career elsewhere in the game.

Kenny KcLean having to pull splinters oot his bum today.

I'd forgotten all about him, he's been easily replaced by a cheaper 19 year old.

If you're on Twitter check out the retweet by Adam Rooney. Jonny Hayes gets a bit of stick on here, some warranted, but he is a classy gent in the main. Check out his response to a loon being bullied and physically attacked by a group of cowards. It does you good to see people going the extra mile. Well done Jonny.

Hayes gave everything for Aberdeen in every game he played, in my view. What's not to like? He moved jobs to get a lot more money in the final few years of his career. Wise man. I dislike Celtic and Rangers but not Hayes.

Hmm you are basically the sole source of Hayes abuse on here. On that basis i hardly think you should be the arbiter of whether it's justified or not.

He never let us down whatsoever, he moved jobs to provide more security for his family, his parent club received a substantial fee, best of luck to the loon......apart from when he plays the once michty.

He moved to the most vile organization in world football after having a clause inserted into his contract after having a move to Cardiff veotoed. Not just any organization but the one were trying to catch at the time. Anyone and anything connected to that club get my full hatred.

Lets not all the funny whispering etc at FT of every game against them prior. "oh but they know eachother". I have my doubts that's what it was about.

If he signed for sevco id love to see how many people would say "he gave us his all", " he was only looking out for his family", "Jonnys welcome back anytime". Id hazard a guess at none.

Hes a c@nt and f@ck him

And breathe....

I do not have time for Sevco/Sellick.....however, I don’t let that consume me with hatred about an ex dandy that left us with a decent wedge in the club’s hipper to play for either.

Importantly, TFI and Carnoustie beckons soon, Hayzer would often play Stoney.....thankfully it is not his main source of income.

I'd take him back no problem - still in his prime, and exactly what we're missing and needing in the centre of midfield. I don't think there's much chance of it though - but I do imagine there'll be a fair bit of activity in January - hopefully offloading a heap of players like Gleeson, Forrester, May for a start.

I see he is struggling to break thru, you are 100% correct, being lightweight and greedy has no place in entertaining football, meanwhile up in Scotland we prefer to see heavyweight players lump it.

I was meaning more you clearly do as"our current coach" plays that tactic with Donkgrove in the team and you love "our current coach". He also has utilized it throughout his tenure. Remember Taylor up front days. Awesome times those. You seem not to mind at all or you have forgotten about it as "our current coach is some kind of genius". I think it is awful and enough to put me off. The sevco game on day one was f@cking awful to watch.
