Hurricane Season has started here in the Mexican Gulf/Caribbean.....and this is a monster, about 450 miles wide and a Category 2 Hurricane.......the outer bands hit Texas at 8am here and the eye is still 150 miles south-east of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Rainfall predictions are 24 inches in 2 days (over a year's-worth of rain!!) with a storm surge of anywhere between 3 feet and 10 feet.

Rainfall map can be updated every 15 minutes and there is a "play" button to see this thing coming in to the coast.

This monster started off the African Coast 10 days ago (for any weather geeks like me out there, the area south of the Azores is the breeding ground for Atlantic hurricanes, between 8 and 20 degrees north of the equator and 26.5 degrees centigrade).....it tracked westwards off the South American continent, swung into the Mexican Yucatan, south of Cuba on Monday night and stalled.....I took some live pics of it as it passed over my head on a beach north of Belize on the Mexican coast........yesterday it picked up heat energy from the Gulf, and literally went beserk feeding on the Gulf moisture.

Here is a tracking video for those interested......watch the tracking circle.

And just for good measure, look who's running the show!

"Texas is facing a "very major disaster" as Hurricane Harvey approaches its coastline, the state's governor says.
Harvey, currently a category three storm in the Gulf of Mexico, will make landfall on Texas' central coast late on Friday or early on Saturday. Greg Abbott has asked for more federal aid to cope with the storm, which may be the worst to hit the US in 12 years."

Still a monster storm......I'm 476 miles south of Corpus Christi by road, 400 miles as the crow flies, and it's been hammering down for 4 hours now, I've lost power briefly and the thunder and lightening is impressive.

I'm bored....so I did some research

An average white puffy cloud contains 216,000 lbs of water

A dark-coloured cumulus nimbus contains 105.8 million lbs of water.

An average hurricane contains 108 billion lbs of water.....and this thing is enormous, certainly bigger than "average"

Not all the violence is on one side. Climate change is simply a hoax to get America to pay out more money for ... er, storm damage."

Houston will deliberately flood areas around downtown tonight by releasing water from the lake-holding areas.....the worry is that the lakes and holding walls/levee walls will collapse (similar to what happened in New Orleans) and hundreds/thousands will be killed.......a slow release means that people have time to escape....it starts in a few hours....this is now a once-in-a 500 year-flood

This has never been attempted before....4,000 cubic feet per second from just one of the lakes

They were all described as 'once in X amount of years' but a quick tally up shows they are about once every four years now.

The vast majority of human beings won't heed the warnings and won't do anything until it directly affects them. Huge corporations know what's happening but pay people to pretend it isn't.

Wouldn't it be nice also if the UN Security Council just for one day stopped trolling each other and discussed dedicating a minuscule part of their budgets to fishing the great maelstroms of plastic out the sea?

The failure of the levee in New Orleans was found to be down to inadequate design and construction. In other words, human negligence.

tarquinbeech
28-08-2017, 02:56 PM
Not sure why Sid has mentioned tower blocks (which were built correctly BTW, but later "beautified" incorrectly)?

New Orleans was partly due to incorrect upkeep of levee walls (I visited there the year after and took the "flood tour").....why anyone would build thousands of homes BELOW sea level within yards of a shoddy "Yosser" wall is beyond me.

Anyone who knows anything about Climate, knows the world is warming faster than Nature can keep up.....the Oceans heat slower BUT retain heat longer and at some point have to vent that heat back into a polluted atmosphere....El Nino is the classic example where the western Pacific just cannot retain the excess heat blown westwards from South America, so Nature takes over and vents it every 4 or 5 years.

Now the Gulf is doing the same.....ReAnalyser shows massive build-up of heat that fuels the Hurricane Season....the problem we have is that naturally-occurring storms are becoming more intense and more frequent.

This is not helped by cities like Houston growing rapidly, more people = more cement, more roads, more tarmac.....floodplains get build over with shopping malls and carparks....nobody will learn, FEMA will pay out trillions of dollars and life goes back to "normal"

Houston Day 4 - Severe flooding continuing to increase, maximum heights will not be reached until 31st August/1st Sept........9 deaths to date

Both holding reservoirs (built in the 1930s after severe floods in the 1920s and 30s) are now full to capacity at 110 feet....despite controlled releases over the last 2 days......basically they are flooding faster than they can empty them and may take several months to drain them to safer levels.

Later today they will deliberately allow the reservoirs to over-spill the sides and flood streets and homes upstream.....evacuations are ongoing.

Moral of the story......in a constantly warming atmosphere, don't buy a home near a coast or a river floodplain and buy a good elevation map before parting with your dosh....most insurance companies will no longer insure homes in certain areas..... or have ridiculously high excesses.

ps There is extensive flooding in the Indian capital, Mumbai today, and yet more tropical storms forming just off the African coast, one off the Mexican west coast and another off the North Carolina coast.......Hurricane Season is in full flow.

the next several days."

Why are a few American deaths so much more important on the global scale than the 1,200 so far recorded in the floods in India, Nepal and Bangladesh?
Is there a scale of suffering whereby white, English-speaking people's lives are so much more important? Or could it be that the pictures are so much easier to import from the United Snakes?

I'd say it's for a number of reasons....
1. The majority of English people relate to the American way of life much more than they do central Asia, so they're more likely to be interested in what's happening over the Atlantic.
2. It's news because we don't or are not supposed to expect this sort of thing to happen in the most materially developed country on Earth.
3. Ordinary people in the USA involved in the crisis giving their reaction to camera speak the same language as us, it's much easier to empathise and become engaged than you would if you're listening to a translator or reading subtitles.
4. There are political reasons why the spotlight should be shone onto the USA. If any country needs to do something about climate change, it's them, so it's not necessarily a bad thing if they and everyone else is under the impression that climate change will affect the USA far more than anybody else, but of course they do have more resources than any other country to deal with this type of problem. In terms of practical help, we should be directing our attention elsewhere.

I did actually mention the Indian deaths in my earlier post......the problem is that Indian/Asian/Chinese deaths are a lot less important than a dozen fat porkers pulled out of the Houston flood-plain......it's as simple as that....now lets hope that Irma smashes into Florida.......maybe then they will listen

1851....though I'm not sure that instruments back then were too sophisticated

There is a chart near the bottom of this Wiki article that shows the number of Atlantic storms each year from 1851, just eye-balling it, you can see the dramatic increase since the 1930s which corresponds with our exponential use of fossil fuels......the last 20/25 years also shows a further dramatic rise (use the left and right arrows on the chart)

In 1903 just under 63,000 cars were built in the world.

By 1910 there were 100,000 cars in Great Britain alone.

By 1968 the worldwide figure had increased to 170 million; a figure that had more than doubled to 375 million by 1985.

In 2002 there were 530 million cars worldwide, in 2010, that figure had jumped to 1 Billion cars world-wide.

To put the numbers in some kind of context, the Great Storm of 1987 that probably many of us can remember clearly (I was at an unforgettable roof party in Swiss Cottage) had peak winds of 120 mph.

I think you are safe looking at the model runs, BUT, as with Matthew last year, these things have a nasty habit of changing direction at the last minute as they hit the 29 degree waters off the Florida Coast.....each 1 degree of temperature rise translates into 18mph of sheer wind power....and they almost have a life of their own seeking out the water rather than the land.....fascinating but scary

Get some extra beers in, find a second-storey room.....and keep away from the windows!!

ps Which Cayo are you on....there's about 5 of them?

tarquinbeech

The latest model runs show a narrow coastline gap opening in the two competing high-pressure systems (one is created by a Rossby wave coming down from the Canadian Arctic on the left, hitting Tennessee and curving up through New York....the other is the semi-permanent Bermuda high in the mid-Atlantic stretching back to Portugal on the right)........that coastline gap is where Irma can "escape"....possibly after leveling the Bahamas and clipping Florida.

Jose is lining up for another run into the Leeward Islands......Anguilla will almost certainly need evacuating as it is already 65% destroyed.

Katia is now coming on to the Mexico shore 200 miles south-east of me.....not too strong at 80mph, hopefully we'll get some rain up here on the Altiplano....the beers are lined up and the fridge/freezer is full of goodies.

Just got back and funnily enough it did end up with 56 hours confined to rooms with no electricity or running water and food supplies shoved through the door! Hurricane Irma was quite a sight, the hotel we had been evacuated to for safety was wrecked, so we were moved again. Had to fly home via Dominican Republic. We had 10 excellent days and 4 abysmal ones, 3 hotels and two countries, but Thomson have promised a 100% refund so I'm more than happy. 9 points from 3 games certainly helped to keep the spirits up!

Wow, you are getting really desperate to discredit me now Captain Birdseye! You are actually sad enough to drag up a topic from 2017 and try to use it to prove that I am a horrible, nasty uncaring person. I don't know which is more embarrassing for you, this one or the pathetic thread you started that was locked trying to prove to everyone that I exploit young girls (the truth is they were exploiting me)! I'll answer your second question before you ask it - yes, I did care about the Cuban people. The journey back to the airport was a real experience, because it showed the stark reality of really likeable people who had very little suddenly having a lot less. I had about £80 worth of Cuban money left, which I thought I would get rid of in the duty free shop. After seeing the devastation first hand it went in the relief bucket instead. I followed the rebuilding operation online and went back there as soon as the resorts opened again. I know this doesn't fit in with what you and tarquin want to believe, but that's your problem not mine.

Jeez, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over the same bloody people with the same petty arguments.

I only looked here because I thought there was something about a hurricane, not windbags.

............and once again, it's so easy not to comment.

I would normally take the piss out of you, but you seem to have lost it big time tonight.

For everyone's sake, either leave the drink alone or seek medical help.
