AH Speaks on Our Transfer Activity

Notts County chairman and owner Alan Hardy has issued the following message to supporters following the closure of the summer transfer window.

My second transfer window at the helm is now at an end – and what a different experience it was to my first!

Back in January we faced a mad dash to exit our transfer embargo before bolstering the squad with a number of late signings to give Kevin Nolan the best possible chance of keeping us in the EFL.

He comfortably achieved that, as he promised he would, setting us up nicely for the summer.

This window, we were keen to get the bulk of our business done early to allow our new signings to settle in properly before the season began and to help the manager and his coaching staff formulate a strong plan for the season ahead.

I'm delighted with the way our business has panned out and I believe our position in the top seven is a good reflection of the positive strides we've made in the transfer market.

No doubt many of you will have been keeping an eager eye on our website and social media today in the hope of some exciting news, but Kevin and I are happy with our squad and saw no reason to add to it today.

We will continue to explore targets with a view to January but, as always, our selection process will be carefully thought-out with the best interests of the club at heart.

We have faith in this group and believe they are getting better day after day.

Your support, which has been magnificent so far this season, will be ***** in helping the players reach their full potential.

Can't argue much with that. I think the signings which have been made are mostly solid and sensible ones and this squad is now good enough for a top half finish. That would be progress compared to the last few seasons and if anyone was expecting a Munto-style spending spree, leading to certain promotion, they were being unrealistic.

I'd be delighted if we won promotion this season, but I'd also be content with seeing some unspectacular progress being made, with a view to further improvement in the following season.

Take away loan players and it could be a relegation fight back four of players belonging to notts county FC are crap.

If everyone stays fit then we should be a solid mid-table side, possibly pushing for the playoffs. If we lose Grant, Ameobi, and Brisley to injury, we'll really struggle to get points. I get what Hardy is saying, and I agree that most of the signings have been solid, but we're still a couple short to deal with a long, hard season.

As others have posted our side aint bad but we have little strength in depth especially up front & in the center of defence, if we are very lucky injury wise then we should be top half which is progress. If we are there abouts come January AH has some big decisions to make but if not I fear that many will take what he says about going all out for promotion with a large pinch of salt in the future.

There are many instances of teams making the playoffs one year and then being relegated the following year. Each season should be treated separately at this level and we should be going full steam for promotion every single year. Realistically that isn't going to happen of course but we shouldn't be accepting mid table and calling it progress.

Top half is progress would be true if we were building a side for the future, but the truth is our forwards are probably in their last season and the midfield is on loan from Forest. We will have to start again next season. The side will probably punch above its weight due to KN, but it's not a good squad and they should not be packing themselves on the back for assembling it.

If you cast your mind back some time I think you may just find that this season was a season where we were building a platform to move forward from. I may be wrong but for the first time in a while it would appear we are clearing the decks and paving the way for that word we all craved for. STABILITY.

With Stead, Ameobi (probably) retiring, Grant and Yates back at Forest then the better players have gone.

If we had a bunch of early-mid 20's first team regulars who are our own players then progress might be a valid point.
